Was Operation Ajax a mistake on our part? Did it indirectly lead to the situation that Iran is now in?

What was our involvement in Ajax; just money? Would it have gone ahead without our support?

But anyway, yes, undoubtedly the coup fermented the revolution which has brought us the current regime in Iran. Whether that would have happened anyway, but some other process is open to debate, but almost certainly the immediacy and violence were a direct result of Ajax.

Of course it did. Overthrowing the democratically elected prime minister, and replacing him with a tyrant, because Iran refused favourable oil concessions? I'd say the resultant coup that overthrew the Shah, and the lack of democracy has stunted its growth quite considerable. It's doing as well as it is, despite all attempts by the West to hold it back.

Oil. They had it we wanted it.

According to a report on the BBC, Britain, motivated by its desire to control Iranian oil fields, contributed to funding for the widespread bribery of Iranian officials, news media and others. The project to overthrow Iran's government was codenamed Operation Ajax (officially TP-AJAX).[2] The coup re-installed Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in the primary position of power. In 2000, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, during the administration of President Bill Clinton, called it a "setback for democratic government" in Iran.[3]

of course it bloody was. It's also a cute example of the chickens coming home to roost or whatever that expression is.

Iran had a democracy and it was taken away.
