They hardly say 'lets get rid of em' either.

Well spotted. What do you want? A cookie?

If it is so obvious,
1) I and others have given our say (Lib included) you haven't
2) You are arguing on in the wrong forum ...

A cookie would be nice ... but I have had enough of your ****.

You're really not making any sense. Don't be surprised if I just ignore you herein.

No ... that means I haven't got anything retort so I am going to restort to 'ignoing'
Sorry if I'm missing something obvious here - but this thread seems to have veered off the point somewhat. Whether or not we require a monarch is immaterial to the debate. Swearing allegiance 'to the Queen' doesn't - to me, at least - mean swearing allegiance to the monarchy per se, but more declaring your allegiance to Britain itself.

Having said that... I'm not sure what doing so would achieve. Neither am I sure I would want to swear allegiance - since it suggests that I would always be in agreement with Britain's actions under whatever government.. which sounds a bit Orwellian to me.

I didn't ask you to. I merely pointed out that your 'you're a socialist' line is getting rather tired.

I hardly go around calling people Socialists on a regular basis.

You hang around some very odd people if they genuinely believe tourists land in Heathrow with aspirations of sharing a cuppa with the Prince of Wales.

Indeed, which is why I think the argument is a load of crap; but still, in the way it is deployed, its meaning is clear.

A slip, admittedly. Still, a bit rich coming from someone who can barely spell:

Could we possibly... just possibly... get back to the topic and stop this ridiculous squabble? Ta.

Swear allegiance to the Queen?

I think its a good idea to like promote, nationalism. Since the UK in the last 10 years has lost its, "Britishness". But at the same time we're a country of many people and cultures and telling them to swear allegiance to the queen is like telling them to turn their backs to their background. For example Irish people who live in Northern Ireland but want a Irish free State but they're forced to swear allegiance to the queen. Or more recently swear allegiance to the Queen rather than Islam.
The whole idea of forcing someone to do something, especially something so nationalist, doesn't sit well with me.

I wonder what the Queen thinks of it.
