I got the impression that PPHs are generally for people who are, or have a view to becoming, ministers or priests...

Well on the whole that impression have some truth to it, but it is no way exclusive. Most are religious (well, christian) foundations, but about the only place that that impression would be valid would be St Stephens House. I think alot of them require you to be christian, but am not sure to be honest!

Mainly yeah, but Greyfriars takes undergraduates in English Lang and Lit not just Theology. It also takes women, so considering its Catholic, that would mean its not just for those of us lucky enough to have vocations! Or thats how I read it anyway.

I thought Greyfriars was Franciscan?

When I was applying, someone got sent to Regent's Park for another interview despite not having put it down as his second choice, or indeed being Christian.

I don't know if that's relevant, but it might be.

I think the bigger halls don't worry too much about religion... here we are, from regent's park website

The college imposes no religious tests or obligations on those who are not preparing for ordination, but offers students the opportunity, if they so wish, to explore and develop a 'Christian mind' about the world and academic learning, especially through the activities of its Centre for the Study of Christianity and Culture.

Whereas St Benet's says... Students need to be benevolently tolerant of monastic life.

That would well and truly suck.

He was furious. He only found out that he had an interview the following morning in the evening, when most of the tutors had gone home, so he didn't have anyone to talk to about it.

So it was all a bit weird. He was the only one sent to a PPH, despite there being a couple of Christians getting pooled.
Some won't admit normal people, for example Campion hall. The others are almost totaly for different Christian groups. Not my scene at all.

Well personally, i find it somewhat perplexing that someone can be furious to be given a second chance at getting into Oxford University. I don't think its as if he will have spent 3 years of being told he is going to hell...

I can see this is in the running for the "PC thread of the day" award.

It's probably true though, I'd rather go anywhere else than a PPH - hand on heart. And they best not try and pull any of that shit on me! Straight rejection will do me fine, but not that!

Regarding Campion Hall he was right though, the site says "Laymen are only admitted rarely and under special circumstances" . Maybe normal wasn't QUITE the right word...

If your looking at PPHs but don't want the monastic association then look at Regents Park. It's a sort of half-way house between a PPH and a college and has around 75 students I think, maybe less.
So what are all of you Oxonians talking about these days..?

I bet you are just lamenting not having chosen Cambridge!

It is franciscan. Run by the Franscians anyway, but it has lay staff and pupils. Its the only Catholic PPH that runs arts courses for lay undergrads as far as I can see. I think it would be deadly to live in a monastery! All the monks ive ever met have been the best fun ever! (It also means that you wouldn't have to trek out to St. Aloyisus' on the Woodstock Rd. to get mass: how lazy am I?)

I must be the one and only since nemesis deserved a capital letter, which indicates it is a proper noun

It was given a capital letter for a purpose... I assume God sent you directly to this site to punish me for something!
