As a star nears the end of it's life cycle it's starts to use up it's the last of it's Hydrogen fuel so instead it fuses the Helium and then fuses that product (so heavier elements are made) up to iron. A supernova will then blast these heavy elements into space that will be swept up by newly forming stars therefore heavier elements exist in later solar systems!
