Is an economics degree worth it or should I just go STEM?

Hi, guys. I'm doing my AS-levels at the moment (Maths, Further Maths, physics and History). I'm more leaning towards STEM degrees at the moment but quite naturally the alleged "Money and power" that supposedly comes with an economics degree is somewhat attractive. However, my parents are pretty working class and as a result don't have city contacts or whatever for internships or whatever, would I struggle to climb the ladder in the financial sector.

Another concern of mine is that its supposedly a horrible culture, no doubt it's a bit exaggerated. However you hear a lot about people becoming *******s in the sector, is there some truth in this?
