Computer Science at City

Hi,

Does anybody do CS at City? I want to know how the course is, the pros and cons of it, and other things from a students perspective.

City seems decent for CS and my teacher has given it a good review. So what is it like from a students perspective?

Thanks

I did Computer Science at City.

First year is common for all CS students, regardless of specialisation topic (e.g. AI, Software Engineering, Games Development, Business Studies, etc...). There is a group project as well, in which your teammates are assigned randomly.

In your second year, your modules will depend on the course you applied to. You can also change your course to one with a specialisation topic after the first year. In this year, you'll start to develop your professional skills in terms of a career, this will lead up to an optional placement year, should you decide to pursue a year's experience. Again, there is another group project.

You'll have to do your own applying for your placement year but you do get help with your CV and City has its own careers service so you can get 1 to 1 help on writing your CV and interview practice. Your placement year goes towards your final grade and replaces your two lowest scoring modules in your final year.

In your final year, you'll do a dissertation which will include most of what you've learned in your 3 years at university. Some people decide to do their dissertation for their placement year employer. You'll have several other modules to work on as well, I believe you get 2 core modules and 3 elective modules.

Pros

Lots of university facilities to help you through the course

Ranked highly for graduate employment

Includes placement year

Covers a lot of content from programming to software engineering and app development

Optional Professional Pathway program available

Placement year counts towards final grade

Cons

Unsupportive student union, pretty useless when they want to defend their own staff

Lack of support for placement students (while on the placement year)

Back then, student social life was poor (not sure if this is still the case now)

Area isn't the best, it's in the middle of a council estate and smells of weed

Area is expensive for food, leisure, etc... though it's London so you can expect that.

I can't think of any other courses that are similar to Business Computing Systems I'm afraid. The other courses are quite heavily programming/theory oriented, so you may have to look elsewhere if you want business aspects.

What about the module "Business Systems" offered in Year 1?

All Year 1 modules are the same for every Computer Science student, regardless of whether you pick a specialist topic (Games Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, etc..).

I can't really remember much about it as it's been so long ago but as it's a Year 1 module, it just goes over the basics about technology and business.
Would you recommend going to City, given that theres a few people who have had a bad experience there?
And idk im confused between Surrey and City. I wanna choose the ones which can offer better chances of employment later on. For example, the KCL name offers better chances of employment but idk bout City
