Self catered accomodation

Am I right in thinking that Pollock Halls is fully catered?

I really don't want to go full or even half board, I just want to buy cheap food and hope to survive. But I can't work out how much other self-catered accomodation there is, considering everyone seems to apply for Pollock. Will I be disadvantaged if I only put self catered places down?

Look at me, writing like I've got an offer. I've not even bloody applied yet...

Pollock Halls is fully catered though if you wanted to go down the self-catered route I don't see a problem. Go to http://www.accom.ed.ac.uk/ for more information on this. To be fair spending your first year in Pollock isn't too bad and at least you're guaranteed food rather than worrying about keeping enough money aside! That said, opinion varies on the quality of food here...(and we're supposed to be fairly good amongst Uni's!)

There is a lot of self-catered accommodation available so that shouldn't be a worry, also, after your first year, you'll most likely end up clubbing together with other students and getting a flat etc. As for not having an offer yet, it's good practice to look into all this, you're being more prepared than I ever was!
Obviously it's your own decision, but really you'll be better off in flats. The general opinion seems to be that living in Pollock is like still being in school and also its damned expensive. At Ed, the flats are good, especially the Warrender Parks because you can wander through the Meadows every morning, and there's always people about in the kitchen so its pretty sociable.

Also there's plenty of cool litlle cheapish grocers and bakers round and about to get quality stuff from and also the wonderful cheapness of Lidl.

To conclude: Pollock bad, Flats good

Oh, I understand that if I want self catered, then Pollock isn't for me. But what I worry about is will my chances of getting the accommodation I want if I rule out Pollock?

i know very little about the accomodation here as i wasnt given any until the saturday i moved in!! but the flats are good fun! if you apply for self catering you are pretty much garunteed to get flats. Darrack court is really nice! i found being in accomodation 5 mins from the centre is also pretty handy!people in pollock are a fair treck away! (you get to stay in bed longer!) im in robertsons close and they are not what you would call luxury but they do the job and a good way to meet people!

I think most people apply for pollock halls and fewer want self catered flats..... put down you're a vegetarian/vegan/any other special dietary needs on the form whether it's true or not and you're more likely to get self catered. I think New Arthur Place is quite nice but I haven't really seen any other places! x

All Edinburgh accomodation is good, full board or self catered. But halls is the best for socialising, although no one in flats seems to have had too much trouble. Many people (like myself) chose pollock over self catering because of the social aspect to living on a student campus.
