Fopp is still around albeit owned by HMV.

They can't have been that "good" or they wouldn't have "lost out".
To be fair, a lot of the "good" shops that were independent lost out to the big franchises due to economies of scale which meant they couldn't earn enough to compete with them. Sad fact really

Fopp. It's only been gone for about a year but I miss it loads.
My friend used to work in Fopp! In Hanley or Cheadle or somewhere...

Yeah its also like comparing Tesco's to Spar, Tesco buys in bulk and so can sell cheaper.

Safeway Plc. was bought out by Morrisons. Morrisons bit off more than they could chew, and are dragging the stores back to the nineteenth century. The staff (including me at the time...) didn't like it much.

They're going down the pan cause McDonalds is cheaper D= but not tastier. There are 3, possibly 4 in Cardiff city centre alone though so I'm always sorted!

Did Partner's stationery go bust?
There's one in Plymouth. We also have Virgin.

Does MVC exist anywhere? We had one, Music Zone took over, that closed down and is now poundland.

Bells Stores - overtaken by Sainsbury's
which is a shame, because it's much more expensive now.

Reading through this thread, made me think how many shops I remember and miss! C&A was good.
Our 'Discovery world' shop closed before Christmas, used to love going in there and looking at all the sciency things. The good thing about their closing down sale was that they were selling all their glowsticks for 50p, so I bought the lot!!!

Eisenegger or something , a clothes shop.

Eisengger Klassica (sp?) I liked some of their clothes, their sales were good when the prices were like £30 off or something!

Wimpy still exists but they are being phased out I think, they tend to be found in old chavlands or motorway service stations. I am glad people here remember John Menzies. The retail business was sold to Smith's, but the library wholesalers business still exists as far as I know.

Music Zone was a sad loss but they expanded too quickly in a shrinking market, a guaranteed way to make your creditors panic.

Radio Rentals and Rumbelows are two shops that have now gone.

Dixon's is another although they were just rebranded currys.digital and the business still exist.

How weird. I keep bumping into people who live near me on the forum today.
Don't suppose you go to Richmond-upon-Thames College, Drayton, Acton High or Elthorne, do you?
Drayton Actually, why do you want to know
