This Easter many will be taking long haul flights to destinations where tourism is a large contributor to the local economy. But is the tourism industry passing on the massive wealth it generates to local people or is it causing too much environmental damage and financial exploitation?
In 2008 global tourism is expected to generate $8 trillion according to research by the World Travel and Tourism Council. Tourism's contribution to the world's gross income is expected to be just under 10% this year.
But while many developing countries are hoping tourism will boost their country's economy sudden shocks such as Kenya's post election violence can keep holidaymakers away. Terrorism and crime are also deterrents.
Does tourism bring enough long term benefits to local people? Should the tourist industry be doing more to encourage responsible tourism? At the same time governments want the export income tourism brings but are they doing enough to protect visitors?
