Qualifying as an Attorney in NY

Good day,

I am living in Trinidad. I have received my LLB from University of London and my LPC from Staffordshire University, UK. I am due to qualify as a solicitor in Trinidad after I complete a 6 month internship. Thus I will be an Attorney at Law in Trinidad next year. I am interested in working in the US however. My aim is to eventually live there. Can someone guide me as to what I will need to do? Do I have to do an LLM as my degree is from the U.K.? or do I submit my documents for review and in essence all I would have to do is the NY bar exam? Thank you for your assistance.

Thank you, but is the LPC worth anything in the US?

What do you suggest can be done to transition over there?

It’s not as simple as just passing the NY Bar. The main challenges will be:

- in the US job market, having a JD is the norm so if you have less than that you need to ensure you have something else significant to stand out from the crowd

- getting a visa will be difficult too

Thanks for the advice

LPC isn’t worth anything in the US.

My advice would be to try and find someone who has done what are looking to do via LinkedIn or your own networks and get advice from them. It’s unlikely you will find them on here.
get a job with a US firm in your home country, hope they transfer you to the US at some point

thanks...my qualifications would enable me to practice in the U.K. and my home country. As my home country is Caribbean based, we unfortunately don’t have US firms here.

I want to become a lawyer too, this is my dream from the childhood. My dad is a lawyer and I remember him wearing a suit, driving an expensive car and being really awesome. I want to be like him and that's why I am learning hard. But I am still thinking what kind of specialization should I take to become a really good one. I've heard that there are few specialist's dealing with Mesothelioma cases. So to say, I think I want to be an asbestos lawyer, because I want to help people to get their compensations and to help them to find the justice. I hope one day, my dream will become true
