Ive applied to do physics for 2008. got offers from manchester (AAA), southampton (ABB) bristol (AAB) warwick (ABB)

my firm is going to be either
    bristol (AAB) or
warwick(ABB - but only because i have further maths and that concession is being removed for next year when all offers will be AAB apparently).

Aside from not being able to choose between them my parents want me to put bristol as first and warwick as second because that gives me more time to think about it. But if i get ABB i'm still pritty likely to get into bristol, but if i get BBB or ABC or something like that im unlikely to get into either which makes warwick a pritty rubbish insurance in my opinion.
so having southampton as my back up i would probably still get in with BBB/BBC. so i think this would be a better insurance.

i'm predicted AA A/B. But predictions and actual grades can vary quite alot
any advice on what to do?

i think you need to be reasonable here. do you really think youll be getting BBB? you should know more or less where you stand, and if youre pretty sure youll be getting ABB or AAB (and your predicted grades seem to suggest so) then really you could just put bristol and warwick as firm and insurance. having said this though, if you put bristol as firm and then decided that you actually want to go to warwick (which is your backup) then you wont be allowed, youll have to go to bristol.

nope, its like "well you put bristol as your firm, so why do you now want to go to your back up" kinda thing. it sucks, but its the way it goes im afraid

Actually you can go to your insurance if you get released by your firm.

Phone them up and ask. Rarely do they refuse to release you though.

Makes sense to be that way. Why would they want someone going there that doesn't want to...

No, your decision about which is your firm and which is your insurance is a contract. You can ask to be released from your firm but if you do this on results day or later you will be released into Clearing, not to your insurance. The only way you can be released to your insurance is if you do this before results day.

For a subject like Physics there's usually quite a wide choice in Clearing. You might find this: Firm and insurance choices and this: Physics in Clearing 2007 helpful.

    i though so...

Also what kind of a person can't decide where they want to go before results day? Why do you need one extra day???
Just decide before you get your results...
