Im guessing you are a member of your union? Therefore why wouldnt you want to have a vote on whom runs and operates your union? Lets also not forget the student representation.

But you do do exams? And follow the university charter? Are a member of socities or sports teams? Prehaps are subject to the university top up fees?

All of these aspects are ones influenced by your union officers.Just because you dont use the physical union building does not mean you are not affected by them.

Union hacks are, almost without exception, a bunch of self-serving incompetents.

I'd thought of standing a few times, but I could never be bothered putting the petition around my mates or hanging around halls like some kind of paedophile canvassing votes...

Seriously though, I've just seen who are standing in one of my previous unis and, knowing them, I can tell you that they're useless, pointless scum. I'd rather most universities just abolished their unions to be frank.

Well OK maybe I should take an interest. Perhaps. But loud, squealing girls campaining for their best friend is annoying. This puts me off, so I no longer care what their policies are or anything. You have to agree that their campaigns are annoying right?
CV-polishing bastards. I knew one guy who was a trustee for two years, and will probably run for president next year (he's on a year abroad). Slick-haired, slimy, arse-kissing dick.

Prehaps more people should instead actually read their proposals and vote based on that rather then either voting for their friends or not voting at all. This will absolish all of this pointless campaigning you seem to despise so much.
even if you want to vote (i didnt bother as nothing actually ever seems to get changed, a year is not long enough to bring in serious changes and they're not going to be allowed to do anything too radical)...

having people bugging you on the way to lectures is still ****ing annoying. I'd rather just read their facebook group and decide from that

Then you really dont have much say on the matter as you didnt even vote. Rather saddening, especially considering the sheffield elections were so very close.

union officers are not going to change top up fees!! it is absolutely pointless imo them campaigning for a national change which is never going to happen, instead of concentrating on internal issues. Yeah we'd all love not to be in bucketloads of debt when we graduate but its never going to happen
Its all about CV's and popularity. I wouldn't mind if it were actually a serious election but it isn't.

Really? How do you know that the cap hasnt been directly affected by the NUS pressure? I'd expect that you actually have very little idea of what the NUS has actually done. Just because they wernt able to totally stop top-up fees does not mean they havnt done many other things.

In hindsight, I would have liked to vote for the proposal to change womens officer to equality officer, whichever one that was. But I dont think that part of it was particularly close.
I really dont see any point in voting for particular representatives for positions - they'll all do the same sort of thing really. Anything they do change will be tweaking, nothing extreme, which I won't really care about

It was at about 56% and required 66%. Id say thats pretty damn close.

It really bugs me when people complain about stuff but don't bother to vote. If more people took an interest, more people would stand and there'd be better candidates. In the end, the people who vote are the people whose friends are standing, hence popularity contest rather than proper election.

The people who say unions don't do anything are the people who know nothing about them.

Why? Their policies tend to be a load of rubbish too. Mindless platitudes about 'openness', 'listening' and, if you're lucky, a pledge to put a snack machine on the ground floor so that the fat, bone-idle ***** who are too useless to climb the stairs can still get their half-hourly confection for three pence cheaper than at the newsagent across the road.

I was saying they aren't going to be able to alter the system back to paying smaller upfront fees, which was what I thought you meant, not about the cap. I admit I'm not very aware of what the NUS has done, but thats my point - I just can't bring myself to care. When some of the politicians implementing top up fees are former NUS presidents, I don't really have great faith that they're not just in it for their own career prospects

I totally agree, and thats why the people whom have that type of policy never get my vote.

Any policies I saw either seemed to be mindnumbingly repetitive and boring, or some ridiculous crowd pleasing *******s like primary school sports days and breaking Guiness world records
