why is lithium chloride a solid and sodium chloride aqueous?

Li is smaller and holds the negative chloride ion closer, with less shielding than Na. This means the ionic bond is stronger, hence a solid. Vice versa for Na.

They are both ionic compounds, solids normally, and both dissolve in water to give aqueous solutions

Just pretend I never asked this
as everyone has said here, they are both ionic compounds hence solids but dissolve in water hence become aqueous solutions. it just depends on the situation and scenario when considering state symbols (:
