I've done some digging and I found the whole story.
Interesting to see they removed a sentence.

What was the sentence that they removed?
In this part "In those days, thought Mr Fisher, we dreamed in colour, though films were in black and white, good always triumphed in the end, and only Americans spoke American" the "and only Americans spoke American" part was not in the exam extract.

Also if you're interested they removed a few sentences in "It had been a disappointing term at St Oswald's. For most of the boys in 3F" paragraph, before they start talking about the students of the past.

"And now, with Christmas around the corner and exams looming large, creativity in general was at its lowest ebb. Oh, he'd tried to engage their interest. But books just didn't seem to kindle the same enthusiasm as they had in the old days."

After that was "Mr Fisher remembered a time - surely not so long ago - when books were golden"

Just another edit they made to the text.

On the other hand, Edexcel's first English language exam contained an excerpt from a decent novel (Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky).
