Would London top unis hold the same reputation if they were not in London?

Yes they would, but alot of other unis like Birbeck and Queen Mary all trade on being located in London and being close to 'city', especially in adverts they run in asia.

They also sort of benefit from being better placed to secure internships as there is less travel involved to interviews and assessment days etc
which indirectly makes the uni look good

I think in the LSE promo video, Krugman comments that LSE's London location is important because it's convenient for other high profile scholars to drop in and give public lectures relative to Oxbridge, so you can't say that London plays no part in some aspect of their rep

I feel like KCL's rep is inflated a bit by London. London doesn't seem to help QMUL much since it's already seen by most to be one of the lower end RG unis.
