Im currently doing a psychology degree, but my lecturer today told us that doing a Psychology degree is useless, and he was being serious.
So those with a psychology degree, what sort of careers and jobs do u have? Is it difficult in terms of popularity to get the job u want?

I presume your lecturer has a psychology degree? Says it all really - they don't even know if their own subject is worth teaching...

Oh please! Psychology -> Clinical psychology. What, you're going to get into that by doing Art?

Art -> Artist

Not everyone with an art degree can be an artist, not everyone with a psychology degree can be a clinical psychologist. I suggest marketing.

I did a psychology and biology degree and now doing clinical psychology. You need to have bps accredited degree to persue a career in psychology with the BPS. I have to agree that all though psychology is interesting and helps to understand human behaviour, i can see what your lecturer is talking about, it all depends on what class of degree you've got and the experience you have behind you.

Exactly, it's ok to have a degree but also what you really need is good work experience, like skills blah blah blah!

I meant you can't get a psychology related job with an art degree! I never mentioned you can't get a job with an art degree.

I'm undertaking a psych/science degree... though I have a feeling I'll probably have to study an extra year in and specialise in something, such as occupational therapy or physio :frown:

You'll need to retrain to become a physio or ocupational therapist!

I know! It sux so much. But you see, the units I'm studing (e.g. exercise physiolgy, human anatomy and biol, + psychology, of course) are similar, or ARE included in B Physio and OT degrees. So if I had to retrain, then I'd probably only have to do another year, not the 'required' two, which still sux! But isn't as bad.

Aaagh, I'm gonna be left out in the cold after this psych/biol, just like all the rest of youse! Lol, I'm just joking.

HEY AT LEAST WE'RE GETTING DEGREES, MANY MANY PEOPLE DON'T!

but psychologists have to have a degree in medicine, don't they? Or maybe i'm making that up...either way a degree in psychology isn't vocational, but it can lead to many many places - research, further education, or maybe an unrelated graduate scheme that!

Psychiatrists need a degree in medicine. Psychologists don't . Not making it up just a simple mistake that lots of people make!

Psychiatrists need to have a medical degree - Clinical Psycholgists don't.

As for the OP, don't forget that Psychology is a very diverse subject meaning there are plently of transferable skills. According to the Psychology tutor at York University that I spoke to an Accountancy conversion is suprisingly common - showing you can switch to completely unrelated areas due to the broad range of skills acquired.

Also - don't forget Educational Psychology, Occupational Psychology, Psychological Research, Forensic Psychology, Health Psychology and Councelling Psychology stem DIRECTLY from a Psychology Degree [plus further training where applicable].

Have a look at the BPS website:

http://www.bps.org.uk/careers/careers.cfm

Hope that helps.

NB: I intend to do Psychology at University

Heh, beat me to it whilst I was typing

[And in advance of the facetious individual who will undoubtebly ask "What transferable skills?" - the experimental nature of Psychology means it encourages numeracy and statistical/analytical ability, an objective approach to general problems as well as basic essay/report writing skills.]

So you can "be" a psychologist, as it were, with only a degree in psychology? that surprises me, i imagined there would be more qualifications needed before practising. But then, i know nothing about any psychology degrees so i don't know where i'm getting this from! Thanks for the info though

no, that's not what he/she said. you generally need further training/qualifications beyond the psychology degree, but you don't need a degree in medicine
