there's always the prospect of looking at someone the wrong way... What's wrong with this world?

I've been to York a few times - it's not a "hard" place. I know just what you mean, though. There's something seriously wrong with society when there're people who'll beat the crap outta you for even looking at them for a second too long.

from what i have heard york is far from a town like you are describing
coventry is meant to be a bit rough but my friend who has lived in coventry, newcastle and gloucester ( my home town) says gloucester is the roughest place he has been - which is pleasing as it means im getting out of a shite hole and into york.

What's crime!!! I think there was one attack on a student this year and the offending people were under the influence of alcohol. York is a very safe place bar the odd theft from peoples rooms during times like Football Matches. Overall in comparison to London you are in absolutely no danger and this is echoed in your insurance premiums.

Coventry's a shithole.

Of course it would be ridiculous to say that there's no crime in York or on campus (there is - take the usual precautions) but compared to many University cities it isn't as bad.

Ive lived in York for 15 years and I have never been mugged or know anyone who has been mugged.

Never known anyone broken in to (watch how you read that!!)

The people here who are "hard" are a joke and wouldn't last 10 minutes in someplace like mosside or liverpool or indeed london. you don;'t have anything to worry about, its a really nice place. After traveling the world and coming back to York you realise what a good place it is to live.

Hope you enjoy yourself here! Acombfosho

Yeah.... everywhere in the world is dangerous.

I live at halifax college, there's a place nearby which people have nicknamed Rape alley...

But I don't know how seriously I take this...

Reply 7

Ive been down rape ally countless times, its safe as houses, mind you, I am a bloke. Also, at the moment theres an armed 'siege' in a house in heslington! Isnt that cool?

What court you in rune?

Reply 8

There are 2 dodgey alleys, one by Halifax which i know as Muddy Path leading to Spring Lane which is only a risk but there have been no problems AFAIK. However Thief Lane cut through (Raper Alleys real name, next to the retreat) has had past problems with sexual assault but it is lit now.

I am in Wood court, House I

Are those lights along the rugby fields next us supposed to work... the little ones by the side of the pathway?

Reply 10

Well I know a couple of people who live in York and I've never had any complaints, though I've never lived there myself.

Reply 11

is there lot of rape case or thief case as these places?WHy do u guys call it rape/thirf alley?I am an international student and a gal so my parents are kinda worry abt the crime rate in york.

Reply 12

I live in York and it's OK.I feel safe to go out alone at night which I don't in many other cities.I've never been a victim of crime and I've lived here for about 10 years now.

There are a couple of rough areas to avoid-Tang Hall,Bellfarm(I was walking by there the other day when someone "threatened" to 'bash my f**king head in'),Chapelfields but it's highly unlikely you'd need to go through these on normal daily business!York is fine!Very safe.

I live right band in the middle of city centre and it gets a bit noisy at times but I'd say its a pretty safe place to be, we've never been broken into (touch wood) and even on a fri/sat night I feel quite safe popping over to budgens at 10 for whatever. Ok, its not perfect, but as city centres go....

It is referred to as Raper Alley becuase there have been cases of Sexual Assault (not sure whether it was rape or not) but as has been said before and re-inforced by the uni and SU it is just a cut through, if its late the long way is only about 2 mins longer. It is also referred to as Thief Lane for a far more normal reason! the lane on which the cuthrough opens out onto is actually called Thief Lane. As has been said i have always felt safe in york, even in Tang Hall and often walk back from town on my own to fulford (even if i am a 6'2" Bloke).

Hope that puts u at ease more,

Al

Crime... In York?!

Its one of the safest cities in the UK, and one of the only cities where people have real respect for where they live.

Yorks level of crime is a plus point, i've never been victim of crime, and neither have any of my family.

I'm living on Thief Lane next year - the name certianly put the my parents off the house I was getting, they thought it was a nickname rather then the name of the actual road :P

Okie i see. Thanks coz my parents are really worry abt the security and crime rates there.Btw, i am just wondering if we are able to choose the hall you want to live in or it is fixed by the school? If so any hall to reco?

Reply 18

You don't get to choose where you live, but you don't get to state your preference of facilities which vaguely gives you a choice.

Reply 19

I think you can put down on your form if you have any preferences but I don't know anyone who actually got their choice!
