so from what i know phenol is a weak acid and don't react with weak base, but do other weak acids such as HCN react with weak base? However, I remember acetic acid do react with weak base such as sodium carbonate etc so i am real confused. Is it just that different weak acids react differently?

isnt HCN a strong acid, im pretty sure it is. Anyhoo, weak acids only dissociate slightly, whereas strong acids dissoaciate fully

i think it's a weak acid because it partially dissociates in water i might be wrong still

Acetic, phenol and HCN are all weak acids. They all dissociate partially.

1M Acetic Acid has a pH of 2.4 (about 0.4% dissociated)

Phenol has a pH of 5 - 6 depending on conc. So, it's even less dissociated. It reacts with sodium hydroxide but not a strong enough acid to react with sodium carbonate. Here's an explanation of Phenol as an acid https://www.chemguide.co.uk/organicp...l/acidity.html

HCN has similar pKa value as Phenol. (table of values http://clas.sa.ucsb.edu/staff/Resour...and%20pKas.pdf)

thanks!
am i right in then assuming that HCN will react similarly to phenol, i.e. not react with carbonate?
