So Lamarcks Theory basically concerned itself with how if an organism gained a characteristic it would be passed on to it's offspring so for example if a common ancestor of the giraffe was tryna get food by stretching its neck if its neck managed to strech by a significant amount this gained height would be given to its offspring

Darwins was different however.
His theory was that there was variation within a species if an event happened that required a certain trait that was more beneficial then the individuals with those alleles would survive and reproduce passing on those alleles to their offspring whilst the ones who didn't have the right trait died and basically over a really long period of time that beneficial trait would be present amongst that population

Darwin came up with the idea of natural selection that organisms with the best characteristics for the environment survive and then breed and pass on their genes whereas less advantaged organisms die out and therefore don't reproduce.

Lamarack thought that characteristics that an organism obtains during its lifetime would be passed on to offspring e.g. he thought that giraffes stretched their necks by reaching the branches and that when they reproduced the offspring had the stretched necks.
