Is your mouth supposed to close when wearing a retainer?

2 days ago I got my braces off and am wearing a retainer. I’ve never had a retainer before(mine is a Hawley retainer it’s basically a big hunk of plastic with some metal that cover my teeth) so idk if your mouth is supposed to close all the way but I’ve noticed that my bite is completely off , one side closes all the way and the other doesn’t. My question is, is this normal? Is your mouth supposed to close all the way when wearing this retainer? I would call my dentist but it’s sunday and they don’t open until Monday. I’m really worried because it’s only been 2 days of having a retainer and my bite is completely off, I can’t imagine what 24 more hours of this monstrosity will do to my mouth.

Thats really strange, i cant really give feedback because ive had a retainer before i had braces which i have on now... and i use bands to line my jaw to be straight.

IDK did you use bands whilst wearing braces? and if so how often because your jaw maybe loosing up back to its old position because it didnt have time to fixate? its possible.

Hm I never thought about that, my ortho only had me on bands for like a month and then I never wore them again. That’s a good thought tho I’ll have to bring that up at my next appointment. Another question: when you had a retainer did it allow your teeth to touch or no? Cuz mine don’t touch when the retainer is on and idk if it’s normal

Yea my teeth could touch i think? im not sure about that but im sure its normal... are they to be used whilst sleeping or? And also i was assigned bands for my whole period but i didn't wear them till now, and i would have had my braces off a couple weeks ago if i had worn them but now because i havent i have around 5-6 months longer in them :frown:

A very similar thing has happened to me. I got my retainers just over a month ago, and whenever I take them out in the morning, it's like my bite is slightly off, and throughout the day, my teeth shift a little bit, so that my bite is normal, but then, when I put the retainers back in at night, my teeth don't fit exactly into them and they have to shift back over night. Then the whole cycle starts again the next day. It's not a huge amount of shifting, but I can definitely notice that my bite is always slightly off in the morning.

The reason I haven't contacted my orthodontist yet is because, if I have to get a new retainer, I'll have to get moulds taken again, which I never used to have a problem with, but last time I got one, the tray they were using didn't quite get all of my teeth, but they didn't have a medium sized tray, so I had to have a GIANT tray of the mould stuff in my mouth and I felt like I couldn't breathe and ended up trying to scrape it out of my mouth when it wasn't dry yet. I don't want to sound dramatic, but was one if the most traumatic experiences of my life... so yeah, unfortunately I don't have any advice for you, but I want you to know that you're seemingly in the same boat as me.

It sucks fr. But I was researching and apparently it’s really easy for them to fix retainers excpesially if it’s a bite issue, you just have to schedule an appointment and they can shave the plastic down to fix your bite, you don’t have to order a completely different one. I’m gonna schedule an app. tomorrow morning and I’ll reply and let ya know how it goes

I just logged back into TSR after a while 😂 I have a technique which I've found has improved it slightly. I found out that when your jaw is resting, the correct posture is to have your lips together, teeth slightly apart, and your tongue on the roof of your mouth (the tongue thing is also known as mewing). Since I've been doing this, my teeth haven't shifted as much during the day, so when I wear my retainers regularly (which I don't always 😬), they fit much better and my jaw doesn't click so much, if at all. I hope this can help you too!

Hi! I'm having the same problem right now. May I know what your dentist said about this?

Hello, I got my braces off, and I had to wait 2 weeks to get my retainers (the plastic one). The bottom one is so bad like it doesn't even fully fit on my teeth and I have worn them it was just so annoying to push down but then the sides would go up, it was just so complicated. And I've told my friends if my from tooth looks weird and they said yea, like one tooth is up and the other is a bit down. What should I do I only have 2 days until my appointment
