The Student Room Group
The Bartlett faculty at UCL has an international reputation, unsure of any others.

The Architectural Association School of Architecture is reputed to be number one in the UK and even the world. The Bartlett is the AA's main "competitor". Both have EXTREMELY artsy courses. You are thought how to THINK which is key.

I find the essence of the statement - "You are taught how to THINK" quite worrying - I would have thought the nature of true creative thought in my book is that you arrive at it yourself, over a period of time, not after being prompted to think along a certain route? Stimulation is good, but I think its a fine line between being encouraged and being indoctrinated in the way that the tutors want you to go.

I saw it too much over the summer at the AA Summer School - most of the unit tutors were pretty much ramming their opinions down the impressionable young students who churned out crit presentations that they clearly didn't understand - they had no conviction as it wasn't their original thinking. Naturally many of them got slated by the external reviwers. I was fortunate to be in a group where many of us were older than our tutors, so we had the benefit of their creative ideas but without being forced down a path. They were excellent tutors - a couple of Dutch product designers.

I think it depends what you want to get out of uni. Looking at the AA year end show in 2004 I didn't really feel any connection with what I saw - I saw a lot of laser cut models (mostly triangles) but I didn't really feel a lot of soul.

I see that the Guardian has updated its league tables for 2004, if you put any stock in those:

http://education.guardian.co.uk/universityguide2004/table/0,14557,1217114,00.html

1. Cambridge 91
2. University College London 85
3. Cardiff 79
4. Loughborough 79
5. Luton 78
6. Nottingham 77
7. Reading 77
8. Sheffield 77
9. Coventry 75
10. East London 74

Obviously the AA isn't on the list as its a private fee paying school now.

What's the rank of the universities on Architecture?

Go to guardian.co.uk. click on the education section, click on the university league tables section, listed on your left and then click on the desired subject heading e.g. Architecture, you will get a list of the universities' ranking on this subject of study, (just don't be suprised if Oxford and Cambridge steal the first two slots, they steal everything else!!!!!!!)

the times one is far less confusing, its more stable, and ther isnt the differnt tabs to arrange the unis, its just a straight table.

1 Cambridge
2 Nottingham
3 Cardiff
4 Sheffield
5 Bath
6 Edinburgh
7 Dundee
8 De Montfort
9 Liverpool
10 Newcastle
It's less up to date than the Guardian one though, I think (times is for 2003, guardian recently updated for '04).

There seem to have been some big changes in the Guardian one 04 over 03.

i dont like the guardian one, because it misses some institutions out, and i dont feel they have been scored correctly, for example,

how is leeds met better than liverpool?
how is man met better than liverpool?

Why is john moores, de montfort, nottingham trent, ranked higher than dundee

ive been to many of the places 15 in fact, and i feel the times one is far more accurate and nearer how I would have ranked them,

dundee should be much higher, ther studios, drop out rates etc are first class!
they have the most studio space compared to any uni in the UK and students dont have to hot desk, ie share space, they get ther own little studio area, for the entire degree!.
