St. Catz college

I was looking at applying to Catz this year for PPE and was wondering what opinions were on the college. I know about the architechture and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. However what I am more interested in is location - how far is the college from the town centre? I know it is extremely close to lectures so that is a plus point.

I like everything else I've heard about the college and am thinking either Catz or Univ. How is it academically for PPE/Economics?

Ask me again in a week, once I've started!

It's a brisk 10 minute walk from the centre, which is away from tourists, but a little less convenient than many other colleges. Academically in general it is excellent (3rd in Norrington), but have no idea for PPE, sorry. Also remember that Catz will offer accomodation in college for all 3 years, which may appeal.

The Norrington Table gives a false impression of St Catz academic reputation, it's certainly a strong college for academia, but it's not up there with Merton, Balliol and John's. This was a bit of a one-off, I wouldn't expect the same level of performance every year.

For PPE it's not great, but not bad either. Probable between 15-20 if we were to rank all the colleges. Known to be quiet strong for Development.

It's Norrington performance is bizarre. 4th-16th-3rd in three years!

Hertford=the best.

I'm not at all biased.

On purely academic grounds: Univ, Hertford, Brasenose, St catz, Keble. Though none of them are bad.

catz is a good choice for ppe (or any subject for that matter), the tutors are generally of a high standard. it's also about 20 metres away from the econ and the (new) politics libraries. and it's large, unlike univ, which is a very small college.

btw baz, how many balliol ppeists get distinctions on average each year?

I was thinking of it because it seems fairly good academically, with good tutors (particularly in Econ), active social life and supposedly decent food. Only thing that isn't great is the location - I don't mind the architechture. On top of that it has very low application ratios which is a bonus.

Okay have just decided on St. Catherine's! Came down to Catz or Univ and went for Catz in the end.
Good stuff... you'll love it! I am :smile:
