So Exeter is close to the city centre but it's a campus university.
Whereas Durham and Cambridge are city universities with buildings throughout their (small) cities.
Also don't limit yourself to RG universities. There's plenty of very good non-RG universities. Bath isn't RG, and has a campus close to the Bath city centre (although up a hill...).
