Lincoln Hall

Has anyone got anything I should know about Lincoln Hall on University Park? I've been looking into accomodation a bit, and it looks really nice and a middle to small-ish size which should suit me, etc.

Also I've viewing the distance from the Economics department as a good thing, as it 'encourages' me to walk a bit, and especially across the Downs, which were really nice. I'm sure this is naive and that I might regret it in the winter months, but there you go. How realistic is this?

What are the rooms like? I'm probably going to go for a single study.

Also I read about having to be out of the JCR (and bar?) by 11pm, which seems a bit weird - is this true, and is it common to all halls?

Anything you could tell me about the hall, any pros and cons, would be useful, thanks.

I do not know Lincoln personally as I do not live there, but I can tell you some of the general things you said.

Across the Downs. I've already said on this forum that I detest the Downs, especially in the winter due to the wind that blows down them and also the rain on them, they are not a pleasant place to be-however, as I got told, you can use the hopper bus, but this'll involve you waiting for it in the bus stop, by which time you may as well have just braved it!

JCR. Most (if not every) halls have a JCR and it is up to the discretion of the warden as to how long you are allowed to stay in there. In mine, it was 24hrs a day, then some people let rubbish in there and whatnot, so it has been shortened to, what I believe to be, 11pm, as with Lincoln. Most halls also have a bar yes, and this is open until 11 on a normal night, and some nights they do stay open for longer, for instance after formals if the afterparty is to be held in hall. But, I must say that I find that the majority of people do not use their JCR, only a select group of people use it. Others tend to hang out in people's rooms or the like, and only tend to use the bar as a meeting place, or for a few pre-drinks before going into town-yet people's rooms are often used for this too. When you can go to a supermarket and get drink far cheaper than the bar, or go to a bar in town, say BZR triples-for-singles, the hall bar does not look so good.

That's just my personal opinion on it anyway.

it a realistic 10mins (max) walk.
the downs is nice and you soon get used to it.plus it's good exercise.
yup we have a jcr and bar in lincoln and yes you have to leave after a certain time.
it's a lovely hall with the great view of the quadrangle in the middle.
if mike's still there, he's a cool porter, the staff are nice etc.
it's like any other hall and the people make the hall.

I'm a first year staying in Lincoln Hall and I've absolutely loved my time here. We didn't get a choice of halls, but if I had the choice, after staying here and knowing mates in other halls, I'd choose Lincoln. It is a really nice hall. As you mentioned, the size is nice. It's big enough that you can make loads of friends with whom you have things in common, but small enough to have community spirit.

The Downs isn't that bad. My room looks out across the Downs and it's such a lovely view when I wake up in the morning, but yes it can get a bit windy across there.

As for the JCR and hall bar, they're much quieter than I was expecting. We tend to hang out in each other's rooms rather than use the JCR, though we do watch neighbours in the JCR most days. As dans said, most people use the hall bar for pre-drinks before going into town, but personally if I wanted to go for a quiet drink, I'd head over to The Mix at Lenton - it's really nice but always quiet in there. If you want an evening out without going into town, it's only a 5-10 minute walk to Mooch and The Venue in the Portland building so we usually go there. I only go to the Hall bar for poker on a wednesday night.

I'm in a single study room by the way and it is so much bigger than I was expecting, much bigger than I need. I think single study is the best value for money. I have mates in ensuite rooms in other halls and, given that they're paying so much more, their rooms are much smaller. I share a toilet and shower with five others but it's always free when I need to use it.

If you want to know anything else about Lincoln Hall, feel free to PM me.

Lincoln is a stupid hall (jokes all around :p:.)

It's a wonderful hall and the people there are really nice. My friend lives there at the moment, and he wouldn't chose anywhere else to live. The bars close at 11:00 throughout the Halls but honestly it doesn't matter. The bars are generally dead after 10:30 unless Campus 14 is going on. Even then, people tend to go clubbing.
love lincoln :-)

the rooms are definately bigger than you need them - mine's the smallest out of all my friends and it's still too big for me :-)

and i love walking across the downs in the morning, makes me feel healthy, as if i'm in the countryside, and the fresh air wakes you up.

Not at all! But some of the clubs are bars too.
Freshers week is all about clubbing etc and to be honest a lot of freshers are keen for that, in my later years, however, people become more and more drawn to just the pub as a night.
