A problem in this time especially is comparing to others. For example, instagram models, fitness fanatics etc... Surely we as a society should realise beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

Except it doesn't - some shapes and sizes are more beautiful than others.

There is an ideal standard of physical beauty. It’s cliche to say it comes in all shapes and sizes when it really doesn’t. But I do agree that it is superficial and it shouldn’t matter. However, many people tend to base their self-worth on their external appearance. Everyone wants to look good, even though it is trivial in the grand scheme of things. It’s just another way of feeling wanted and appreciated.

Because that's the harsh reality. I know we're supposed to be vomiting rainbows and stuff but really, not everyone is good looking. It's not about them being "insecure", it's that they recognise that they are not physically appealing.

What IS true is that looks don't determine your worth. You can do many things with your life that do not involve your looks. That one is not good looking does not deduce from their worth, you can be many other things, most of which are up to you, really.

There was an interesting moment on the TV program on England football managers over the week-end. When ex-players were blaming the lack of tournament success under Ivan Capello on his strict regime. With Rio Ferdinand giving the example of the rule of no butter being allowed on bread.

Ivan's response to all this was that these were loser's excuses.

Thinking about it, he was probably right.

When it comes to insecurity about looks, there's a large element of loser's excuses.
Where it's human nature to blame a lack of success in the mating game on looks. As an easy cop out excuse.
When the main reason for the lack of success is not looks. Instead it's what's going on between the ears. Or what's not going on. It's the mental state. The beliefs. Leading to the behaviour of the person involved.
