I don't know about the actual rules for various professions, but it frustrates me that discriminate exists against people with tattoos which don't offend anyone :frown:

I personally don't like tattoos and for me it definitely reflects negatively on a person if I see they have one, especially a professional. Maybe I shouldn't be so predjudice, but I can't help how I feel, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Why risk people judging you? Don't get one in a visible place would be my advice.

I'm curious why does it reflect negatively?

Well, yeah, you can "help" how you feel.

im sure there must be some anti-discrimination law or something - but that doesn't stop employers being prejudiced against people with tattoes. my advice would be to get a tatto somewhere where you can alway cover it up. what about your ankle?? i think ankle ones look cute :p:

Yeah definately it's just the way it is

I just don't understand why having markings on your skin makes you any worse of a person unless of course the markings are racist or explicit for example.

Reply 7

Yeah thats what i'm thinking malorey, best to be safe than sorry, it would be pants to lose a great job opportunity just coz somebody has a different perspective on life. hmmm i'd not thought about my ankle...

I think tattoos makes a person seem less professional, whatever their job and qualifications. They just lower your perceptions of a person somehow. I'd advise not getting one somewhere visible.

Reply 9

how big a tattoo where you thinking of gettin? i know some lads in my sixth form have huge ones all up their forearms, which i dont particularly like (especially as they dont have particularly muscle forearms lol)

Reply 10

5cm so quite small. I do like big tattoos though, mind you I am very picky about the design

Reply 11

to be honest, facial piercings would bother me more than a tatto. not sure why though

Reply 12

i dont see a problem with small tatoos to be honest but i no that some people associate tattos with troublesome people.

Take this as an example, in my liverpool interview, on the ethics station:
where do you live? suffolk, ah i dont dont know if its like this where you are but where i live you dont approch someone without first checking to see how many pircings they have, how many tatoos, if they are in trackie bottoms etc etc. To which i responded that that was abit predjudiced but i knew where she was coming from.

But yeah small tatoos can look quite nice i think. its all personal preferance at the end of the day. My docter has a tatoo on her wrist. But ive never seen another docter or vet with a tatoo visible.

Maybe it would be a problem if you had a prominent tattoo of a dead hamster.

I haven't got any facial piercings so I spose I pass the respectablity test on that one!

Reply 15

yeah i dont like facial piercings....only on the ears....the worst one is tounge piercings if you ask me! ew. sorry if this offends anyone. personal preferance.

Reply 16

oh no i do have my tongue pierced! lol  I see i'm going to be the wild crazy vet student amongst all the more reserved respectable members of the vet student community :p:

Reply 17

I really dont like septum of the nose piercings, makes you look like a bull, but I dont mind tattoos so long as they aint offensive or huge, I would like a small one but I aint got the balls...

Reply 18

what are you thinking of getting tatooed? the one you have at the moment looks like quite a respectable one so it depends i think

Reply 19

o sorry! lol my mate has her tongue done and she likes to wave it it everyones face cause its still abit of a novelty to her and thts why i dont like them....also they idea of them getting infected. ew.

if you want the tatoo you might as well get it, if its only small you can always cover it up for job interviews anyway so i wouldnt worry to much, and you alredi have an offer so they obviously didnt mind the tongue piercing at interview and stuff.
