Southampton vs. York

OK guys, I'm going for Modern Languages and Linguistics, and I'm stuck.

York - ABB (A in French or German)

- nearer to home (about 1h30 in car)
- very well respected
- great course
- great city
- not the best nightlife?
- languages department quite small - is this good or bad?
- all on one campus
- I like the collegiate system
- the campus isn't particularly pretty in parts
- have a handful of close friends going there

Southampton BBBB

- far away from home (about 5hr by car)
- again, well respected
- top 5 for modern languages; bigger department
- great course
- haven't seen the city, but heard good things
- better nightlife?
- spread out on a couple of campuses, but all still near each other
- campus really pretty
- nobody i know even applied there

I'm really stuck between the two. I feel York would be the easier option, but the adventurous side of me is telling me to go to Southampton. It'll be different - allow me to explore the other end of the country...

I mean half of these I'm not even sure if they're good or bad points. Do I really want to go to a uni with a few other friends? Would this stop my 'fresh start'? Is a good nightlife really necessary? Or would I be content in either place?

What does everyone think? Where would you go?

It's difficult to say really! You can only make the choice yourself at the end of the day, but I would say York (just because that is my first choice lol)

Reply 2

i think going far away from home will allow you to experience more. southampton!

Reply 3

Southampton seems the best out of your options. Hopefully someone with firsthand experience with either of these unis will give you some insight.

Reply 4

go and visit southampton and talk to the students there

Reply 5

Don't go to a uni because your friends are going there, go because you like the uni. IMO it's better to go alone anyway since you are more likely to make an effort with people.

agree!

There is duck poo all over york's campus. Put me right off. Some might say superficial but would you want to walk through it all day?

Soton has the correct amount of ducks.

I have done - and they seem lovely. But so do the ones I talked to at York! Anyway, I'm going again on the 8th of April.

Has anyone else got experience in going to uni that's so far away from home? Problems? Advantages? I'd have to book trains in advance, and go through London...

Thanks for your comments so far, everyone

definitely don't go to a university just because your friends are
but unless your friends are doing the same subject as you and you join the same societies you'll make plenty of new friends too and not feel that your missing out

definitely find out more about the southampton to see if the city suits you

go and get some independence..

Reply 11

Both are good universities... but personally I'd choose Southampton on the basis that it's in the south of England, is a larger university, the department is larger, and it's more of a city than York.

Also, try and think as to whether you'll like the real independence or not. Your family and friends will all be close by with you going to York, whereas in Southampton you'll really be on your own and be independent.

I definitely want the independence. I really do. But I'd still be able to have it at York, surely? I don't intend to come home loads, regardless of where I stay.

And out of interest, why would you say being in the south is advantageous?

lol - yet you support liverpool!!

i just think you may want a change? after being in the north for some time.

I vote Southampton (not because I'm biased) but because according to your lists the department is better at Southampton. Give in to your sense of adventure - wessex til i die! x

go for the course
