Work Experience

Hi everyone,

I'll be applying for university after summer and I figured summer would be a good time to get some Archaeological work experince that I can mention on my personal statement. However, I've struggled to find a dig that I could realistically take part in and the only one I have found charges a fee which I am not in a good position to pay.

My question is, is work experience absolutely necessary to get onto an Archaeology course at university?

No work experience isn't necessary to get into university for any course unless it's in the requirements which I doubt it is. You usually just need the qualifications they are asking for. Work experience is only necessary to get most jobs but you are most likely to get an opportunity while at university to gain work experience anyway so you don't really need to do it before starting university.

Practical experience is by no means necessary but if you can take part in a dig then that will probably help your application. Finding a project that doesn't charge can be tricky, especially one within reasonable travelling distance.

If you haven't already, check the lists of digs on the Current Archaeology and Past Horizons websites. There are probably others also. It's worth keeping an eye on your local paper, they sometimes publish articles on community projects that require volunteers.
