Read the Quran, read hadeeth, stories of the companions of the prophet. Be inspired by their stories e,g Mus’ab ibn Umayr who came from a very wealthy family, but after he accepted Islam his father practically disowned him. He ended becoming so poor that when he died (on the battlefield i think) he didnt even own a peice of cloth which they could shroud him in. These sort of stories often makes a person ponder and compare their own souls with the souls of the pious predecessors and so they strive to do better.

try to pray 5 times, there was a time when i found it difficult to pray 5 times because of my lifestyle, once you start you wont stop, praying itself will keep you away from a lot of sins as god say in the quran.
