University thoughts

For people that have completed university, do you believe all the debt has been worth the position you are in now?
For people that are currently at university, do you solely believe you will benefit from university or are you just going with the flow for the sake of it?
(Currently in third year at university)

Yes, I think I will benefit as I wouldn't be legally qualified to practice within the career I want without a degree. I weighed up a lot of other options (some of which would not have required university)n before deciding on this path.

It's given me options that I wouldn't otherwise have- such as being able to do a PGCE this September. However I didn't go to uni straight from school and studied something I knew I would enjoy. My first job after uni I wouldn't have got without a degree, my second one was a bit different.

I also had some great experiences I wouldn't have otherwise had while at uni. If you make the most of the uni experience then you get more out of it than just a degree.

I did go before fee rises but chances are you won't pay back your full loan anyway and you don't miss the money you never had.

University debt is a marginal tax on income that may or may not dissapear before you've put in 30 years of work.

Without university none of the career paths I'm interested in would be even remotely a possibility. I'm making the very most of my time at uni so I can maximise the result of where I end up not just after uni but 10-15+ years after uni.

Admittedly, I was under the £3K tuition fee system but even if I were under the £9K system, I can't put a price on what I learnt at uni (and I'm talking strictly academically here - though obviously one learns things from socialising, networking, volunteering, etc.). It was worth its weight in gold to me and, considering that I'll probably never pay my entire tuition fee loan off, it's totally worth whatever "debt" I may be in now or get into in the future :moon:
I have been very lucky that I live & studied in Scotland and stayed at home so have absolutely no debt from university.

Even if I had incurred debt, it still would have been worth as I need a degree for my future line of work

What's your aim in life? Do you think buying football tickets would be worth it for a person who likes football?

Don't see how being on here and making money are mutually exclusive..

I've been on here and made ~£700-1000 a month when I was a teen flogging phones, been on here and made ~$150k in revenue in a tech startup me and some folks built whilst in school, am on here now and will be starting an internship paying £500+ a week in a few days.

I **** around on here because I enjoy it and want to help people.

So I'm not quite sure what your point is.

I was under the 3k setup, so not quite as bad. But yes, in short. Eye on the prize and playing the long game. I've not done badly out of it, will only get better.

What degree?
I'm just finishing my degree in a non-vocational subject and although I don't feel it's necessarily going to get me into a much more incredible job than I would've gone into without my degree, I still think it was worth it.

I have grown up exponentially, and I don't think I could have done that without being in this environment. I'm interested in learning and pushing myself, which I wasn't before I came here. I've had the chance to get work experience, to volunteer, to be in societies, to travel and more and if I had gone straight into a job when I left sixth form I wouldn't have done any of it. I've had some pretty terrible times throughout the years as well, but I'm in an environment where it's okay to make mistakes, where I've been able to get support in so many different areas, and where I've been able to find out who I am. I don't think I would've grown this much had I not come to university.

Even though my course isn't vocational, like I said, it's made me appreciate education and I've learnt so much that is going to help me in the future (both career-wise and not).

The debt is a grim amount when you think about it, but I always remember my sixth form tutor saying "it's the best debt you'll ever have", and I agree with that now. It's just going to be like an extra tax coming out of my account, and only if I end up earning enough. I honestly don't care about it at all. In fact, I'm planning on getting a Masters too, so.

Edit: I'm not saying it should be as expensive as it is, because it shouldn't, and the whole system with loans/grants is pretty messed up. I just appreciate that I've been able to get a degree despite it.
