Economics 2nd year transfer

Hi everyone, first post here...

I'm currently at Nottingham Uni (first year) and doing Industrial Economics. Although the degree is alright, I would have liked more economics in it! Out of 12 modules this year barely 6 involve economics... it's more a business degree with economics... I just want to delve into the theory a bit more.

I'm keen to hear from those who have transferred to Nottingham straight into the 2nd year economics course- was it hard?

I have 3 As at A2 (Maths, Chemistry and Biology), an A at AS, 6 As at GCSE, 2 A*s and a Distinction. Also, last semester I got 5 firsts and a 2:1... I'd like to think that with that record and with me being in Nottingham already it'd be a little easier to transfer to the 2nd year? I realise that the economics in the Economics BA/BSc will be more in depth and mathematical, but I'm sure with the basics from my current modules and a few months over summer I can catch up.

What are your thoughts? If Nottingham won't let me transfer, I'm thinking of asking Warwick if it'd be possible (the Economics course they followed is very similar to stuff I've done in the first year, so should be a decent foundation for the 2nd year). I do want to stay at Nottingham (love it)... and then there's the fact that I live in Coventry (so would have to stay at home with the parents if I went Warwick... reason I didn't apply there in the first place!)...

Is there any advice one could offer me in this position?

Appreciate any help, thanks!

You just need to send off an email to the department and Nottingham, explaining your situation and asking whether they will accept you as a transfer student into economics. Seeing as you've got good grades and you're already there, I don't see why it would be a problem - but it depends how many places they have on their course, whether your first year modules that you've studied are sufficient and what they feel like doing. Nobody on here can assess your chances really, you're just going to have to contact them and ask

I guess you need to start from 1st year again if you want to transfer to Economics at Nottingham. You'd better consult the School secretary, Ms Hilary Deacon. She's very nice. And probably you should ask the Year 2 or Year 1 directors.
I think the point is whether you have studied Introductory Micro and Macroeconomics and enough maths.

That's what my worry is... but I think I can put a good case forward- A level Maths at an A grade, have done a quantitative methods module, and there's maths in the intro economics modules. As Nottingham don't require you to have Maths at A level, I guess the first year is just to get everyone on a level playing field maths wise? And the maths they do use won't be *that* much more advanced than I'm used to. That's the hope anyway. Thanks for your contact points- I'll send and email to the undergraduate admissions tutor, and also the secretary.
how comes you didn't do Economics at A-Level?

School didn't offer it. Could have gone elsewhere, but was advised that I wouldn't really need to, so I didn't.

Have been emailing my tutor/lecturer about my case, and also the Admissions tutor. At first they wanted me to start the first year again, but it wasn't an option. In the end, they've said I can join from the 2nd year as long as I get a 70% average. Which I'm on course to do.

A LOT of work to do though over summer I think- done quite a bit from my current course, but there's still quite a way to go... hope I won't be too underprepared for next year.

Just need to crack on with revision now... 6 weeks(ish) until exams.

Update: I got on the course and am really hoping I don't get too much of a disadvantage for next year's modules. They've put me on the quant. maths module (3rd one) but said I could still get a BSc which is good.

Will look at maybe getting the first year micro/macro books out and reading through them later on this summer. Anyone have any recommendations as to which ones are good?
Nice work!
