Uwe Or Surrey???

Hi guys,

have been offered the child nursing programme at both the university of surrey and uwe. have visited both and am undecided!!!

uni of surrey clearly has the better reputation, excellent graduate employment rates, and would look good on cv. on the other hand, uwe has the better placements and bristol is a more vibrant city to guildford!!

anybody have an opinion on either uni...?and does anyone know whether employers are more concerned with the insititution you attended or the grades obtained?thanks!

I can't say I know about what employers want in terms of reputation, but I would've thought they'd favour people who'd been on placement years and had a good quality degree, whereever that is from. I'd say don't just choose on repuation coz it isn't everything and you've gotta live there for 3 years so whether the reputation is fantastic or rubbish would make no difference in that respect. My firm choice is with surrey so obviously I prefer that to uwe, although I've never visited uwe so can't comment on what it's like. In terms of Guildford, yeh it's probably not as virant as Bristol, but I reckons it's got most things TBH that you'd need, and central London is only 30mins away if you got bored.

Other than that, I once read that a method of seeing which you like better is you get 2 pieces of paper, and write the name of a uni on each, put them in a hat and pick one out. Tell yourself beforehand that whichever one you pick out is where you will go. When you see which uni is on the paper, if your gut feeling is "damn it, should've chosen the other one" then chose whichever one you didnt pick the paper of. If you are pleased then stick with that one as your firm. Don't know if that makes sense or helps in any way but hope it does.

Hello,

I had a similar dilemma.

I got accepted at both UWE and Kent to study Business.

league table wise Kent and Surrey are similar, but im going for UWE.

I thought the atmosphere was great, the placements are certainly good and the town has everything you will need.

Also the Uni has a good reputation among employers, especially employers in the southwest.

Also a 1st or 2.1 degree at UWE would be worth more than a 2.1 or 2.2 at Surrey, throw in a placement and your employability jumps up.

EDIT: ALSO employers PRIMARILY ask for a good degree, usually a 2.1 and additionaly e.g 280 UCAS POINTS. This allows them to judge how well you did at A level, without estimating your A level/BND results based on your University of choice.

Hope that helps.

Bristol as a city is so much more exciting than Guildford, which although big, is very family orientated (I've lived in the area since the age of 2). Although London is only about half an hour from London by train, and there are at least 3 fast trains an hour with the exception of Sundays.
