What are some interesting books or latest inventions/news in the mechanical engineering world.

Read or do things because you are curious about engineering, not just to list some books in your personal statement.

That said, some universities provide suggested reading:
e.g. https://www.admissions.eng.cam.ac.uk/information/reading

Also have a look at
http://www.myheplus.com/subjects/engineering
and http://i-want-to-study-engineering.org

And messing about with an arduino or similar is always a good thing.
