To be honest, most of us only start hearing the formal names for degree classifications towards the end of our studies/when applying for postgraduate courses.
This proves me right. A 2:1 is formally expressed as second class, division one. It's not, in your words, a "first class honours". That would be a First or a 1:1.

yeah, i realized i put 1st class and not 2nd class in my original message. i knew what i put down, but just wrote the wrong one haha by accident. that's where i got my info from.
