What is Lafrowda Accommodation really like?

If you're a guaranteed returner you can state a preference for Block, Floor and Room choice, although whether they allocate this to you is at their discretion.

In my personal opinion, there is a world of difference between Standard and Enhanced. That £15 odd quid sure does go a long way, I assure you - but that doesn't mean to say people in Standard didn't have as much fun as we did in Enhanced. To be honest most are Enhanced blocks now anyway.

As for new students, you don't get to choose. To be honest wherever you are in Lafrowda you'll love it anyway. Make sure to introduce yourself to Gulam, the Cornwall House Porter. Always much fun banter to be had.

Seconded, Gulam is a legend!!!
Always without fail takes the piss out of my Unicard photo when I go to collect mail from him.

Haha, such things I have missed this year. Its funny how you take Halls for granted when you're there.

Still, is always good fun to shoot the breeze with the Porters when you're bored and are in need of some entertainment!

Jem in the Harrison reception is brilliant to talk to - nearly missed a lecture because of him!

You all better be ****ing right about this, because without seeing it in real life or anything I've put this down as my first choice. I did choose enchanced at least so it shouldn't be too shabby.

I doubt any university residence can be THAT bad... it's just a place to work and sleep really.

I wouldn't mince your words, as Duryard was 'THAT bad' - the only truly shabby residence the uni has left is Standard, and whispers are Lafrowda is due to go the same way of the demolition site that is Duryard, soon.

Enhanced is lovely. As much as I love Lafrowda, I wouldn't choose to live in Standard if you paid me, its that bad. But then by the same token I'd choose to live in Enhanced over Birks, Holland, Mardon, St Germans and all those £100+ a week halls put together.

The buildings may not be much to look at, (insert swedish prison joke here) but the same as anywhere, the people make the place. Who cares if you don't have a heated towel rail or a double bed, or an en-suite? You make of it what you will. If you choose to make the most of it, you'll love it. I loved it so much last year I want to go back and do it all again! Oh yeah as a side note, look out any soon-to-be Lafrowdians, you may be lucky enough to have me as your Student Mentor :P

If you haven't already noticed, everyone whose given positive advice on potential residence choices has advised more toward their previous or current halls, so really its not about the place at all, its more about the people

I don't believe that Lafrowda rumour one bit - all that's happening is that it's going to be run by a company separate from Hospitality Services. They've spent too long refurbishing it to knock it all down and start again now.

I also wouldn't agree with you on Standard Laffy - having seen inside it on several occasions and known friends who have lived there, I would say it is perfectly adequate and that tbh it's only the fixtures and fittings in the kitchens that desperately need replacing.

I have to stick up for Lafrowda Standard here, as its really not that much worse than Enhanced.
I certainly wouldn't be happy paying an extra £15 a week for some wall plaster and bit more communal space, no siree. The old place is fine as it is. And like you said, its the people that make it. I'd MUCH rather be in Standard with the lovely people I am sharing with now, than in Enhanced with people I may not get on with.
Lafrowda, St Germans and Rowe have actually been bought by a private landlord now, who will be refurbing all of Standard Lafrowda and building more around the area, which I don't think is a good idea at all.
At least I won't be around much to see the damage as this work won't start until my 3rd year.

And pfffft Angelil beat me to the defence of Laffy Standard
At least I'm not the only one that thinks it deserves a bit more credit.

Don't get me wrong, price-wise its odds on the best you'll get around Exeter by a very, very long shot. I just think that the extra 14-odd quid really does make a hell of a difference to have newer fixtures and furnishings. Thats just me though, I'm perhaps a little vain in being that I like my creature comforts.

Knowing people who lived in Standard last year I think it would be fair to say most of those people probably had an even better time than we did in Enhanced. In fact, I had many a good night spent in J block! It is totally subjective of course, it all hinges on the crowd you get. Unfortunately for Standard since the demise of Duryard, it now carries the label of being the 'cheapest' halls, with all the connotations this entails. For instance, it would be nice if Self Catering were to clean the window boxes, as most of the white ones are covered in mould / debris just to help make the place look a little tidier, instead of spending money on a new office and swanky new signs.

I've heard the long-term plan is to tear down Lafrowda to make way for the vision of the new, private-controlled halls, which I can only but assume would be an over-priced and totally uneccessary en-suite all singing all dancing £100 a week dystopia.

For the time being, I beleive after next year, the private landlord takes over. Quite what this entails I'm not sure, but as I'm hoping to continue to live in Lafrowda for my fourth year also, I would like to know. Self Catering are keeping their cards close to their chest but I beleive it will simply be a case of the new contractor takes over and collects the rent at the end of the month, leaving Self Catering to deal with the day to day admin aspects. That makes the most sense. I'm just more than a little anxious to know how this new contractor will perform, as from having the displeasure of having to deal with companies such as Cardens personally, and hearing horror stories of Club Easy and the like, I can't see it being good.

Apparently parking for residents next year is forbidden, but SC couldn't seem to make their minds up whether that was for 'contractors vehicles' (quote) or for 'the university's "green plan"'). The council haven't had any applications for planning permission on St. Germans Road at all so once again, trying to get a straight answer out of SC Office seems elusive. They seemed to reckon there will be some new building work going up over the summer, but I refuse to see how. With St. Germans House (I beleive this is its name - on St. Germans Road behind the Agriculture building) as a listed building, I can't see the council giving any form of planning permission near or around it whatsoever. Rumour has it they're waiting for it to eventually capitulate so they can build as they please. The tennis courts will be the first things gone, followed by the 'car park' as such. But then, this is just chinese whispers.

Why can't they just leave Lafrowda alone? Its perfect as it is.

I'm picking laffy without visiting it

Reply 31

is laffy near queens building or amory?

Reply 32

Closer to The Armoury than Queens. Streatham Court and Xfi are closest.

Reply 33

Nowhere's really 'far' from anything else on campus though, unless you're talking about Birks/Duryard, which unlike everything else really is a total mission :p:

Reply 34

Don't forget Cook/Llewellyn Bianca  Unless you count getting to Birks as somewhere close on campus...

Reply 35

Cooks/Llewellyn aren't on campus though...Birks is so far away that even though it's on campus it barely qualifies as being so :p:

Reply 36

Same difference :p:

Reply 37

^^Really? Is Birks that much of a treck?...I've applied there :s-smilie: Oh well it will be good exercise (if I get in that is!)

Reply 38

I think it is :p: But saying that, I only ever walked there from Laffy/St Germans, so given that that's about as far away from Birks as you can get...

Reply 39

birks is at the bottom of a massive hill, which is a big effort to climb up! when drunk, it's just not going to happen, and getting down from the student bar will just be carnage
