Don't get me wrong, price-wise its odds on the best you'll get around Exeter by a very, very long shot. I just think that the extra 14-odd quid really does make a hell of a difference to have newer fixtures and furnishings. Thats just me though, I'm perhaps a little vain in being that I like my creature comforts.
Knowing people who lived in Standard last year I think it would be fair to say most of those people probably had an even better time than we did in Enhanced. In fact, I had many a good night spent in J block! It is totally subjective of course, it all hinges on the crowd you get. Unfortunately for Standard since the demise of Duryard, it now carries the label of being the 'cheapest' halls, with all the connotations this entails. For instance, it would be nice if Self Catering were to clean the window boxes, as most of the white ones are covered in mould / debris just to help make the place look a little tidier, instead of spending money on a new office and swanky new signs.
I've heard the long-term plan is to tear down Lafrowda to make way for the vision of the new, private-controlled halls, which I can only but assume would be an over-priced and totally uneccessary en-suite all singing all dancing £100 a week dystopia.
For the time being, I beleive after next year, the private landlord takes over. Quite what this entails I'm not sure, but as I'm hoping to continue to live in Lafrowda for my fourth year also, I would like to know. Self Catering are keeping their cards close to their chest but I beleive it will simply be a case of the new contractor takes over and collects the rent at the end of the month, leaving Self Catering to deal with the day to day admin aspects. That makes the most sense. I'm just more than a little anxious to know how this new contractor will perform, as from having the displeasure of having to deal with companies such as Cardens personally, and hearing horror stories of Club Easy and the like, I can't see it being good.
Apparently parking for residents next year is forbidden, but SC couldn't seem to make their minds up whether that was for 'contractors vehicles' (quote) or for 'the university's "green plan"'). The council haven't had any applications for planning permission on St. Germans Road at all so once again, trying to get a straight answer out of SC Office seems elusive. They seemed to reckon there will be some new building work going up over the summer, but I refuse to see how. With St. Germans House (I beleive this is its name - on St. Germans Road behind the Agriculture building) as a listed building, I can't see the council giving any form of planning permission near or around it whatsoever. Rumour has it they're waiting for it to eventually capitulate so they can build as they please. The tennis courts will be the first things gone, followed by the 'car park' as such. But then, this is just chinese whispers.
Why can't they just leave Lafrowda alone? Its perfect as it is.
