^^Really? Is Birks that much of a treck?...I've applied there :s-smilie: Oh well it will be good exercise (if I get in that is!)

it takes about 10 minutes to get from birk's to queens and about 15 to get to the amory

it pretty much is off campus as you will find a lot of your friends won't come and visit you for the pain of cardiac :frown: (good excuse for getting taxis to clubs on a night out though rather than just because you were too drunk to walk  )

I don't think I'd want to walk back from say Mambos to Birks / Duryard. Doing it from Lafrowda was bad enough.

I found walking from Murray on a good day would take about 30-40 mins to get to Lafrowda. Thats skirting cardiac hill and substituting it for 'Mini Moss Side' instead.

I can only really afford Lafrowda Standard and was worrying, but I feel so much better now. Thanks, guys!

Enhanced is lovely. As much as I love Lafrowda, I wouldn't choose to live in Standard if you paid me, its that bad. But then by the same token I'd choose to live in Enhanced over Birks, Holland, Mardon, St Germans and all those £100+ a week halls put together.

The buildings may not be much to look at, (insert swedish prison joke here) but the same as anywhere, the people make the place. Who cares if you don't have a heated towel rail or a double bed, or an en-suite? You make of it what you will. If you choose to make the most of it, you'll love it. I loved it so much last year I want to go back and do it all again! Oh yeah as a side note, look out any soon-to-be Lafrowdians, you may be lucky enough to have me as your Student Mentor :P

If you haven't already noticed, everyone whose given positive advice on potential residence choices has advised more toward their previous or current halls, so really its not about the place at all, its more about the people

I also wouldn't agree with you on Standard Laffy - having seen inside it on several occasions and known friends who have lived there, I would say it is perfectly adequate and that tbh it's only the fixtures and fittings in the kitchens that desperately need replacing.

I've applied for Lafrowda Enhanced, Northernhay, and Cook Mews =D

I haven't visited Lafrowda though, but was wondering if anyone could describe the number of flats / number of rooms per flat on average? Thankies for going to the trouble ^^

[edit] oh and also one long shot: are the enhanced rooms big enough for me to bring along my double bed? The reason I ask is my brother somehow managed to get permission to fold his single up and construct his double, and just left the single underneath until moving out... the lucky git.

Lafrowda is basically made up of eight double blocks (e.g. A and B, C and D). Each block has four floors and the vast majority of the flats have 11 or 12 bedrooms and take up the whole of one floor of the block. The occasional exceptions are mainly on the ground floor, where there are some smaller flats.

If you look on the accommodation bit of the uni website, and go into the virtual tours, you can see exactly what the rooms are like inside. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't let you bring your double bed with you, though, even if you could fit it in (which you couldn't, really) - sorry!

HAHA no way, there won't be enough room. Enhanced and standard rooms are the same size. Only difference is newer fixtures/fittings. Even St German's don't have a proper double bed...its called a "double" but its actually more like a 3/4 bed. Everyone else in Lafrowda has to live without a double bed. I think you can manage too :p:

Damn it! :P Ah well, I'm sure I'll manage :yep: thanks for the description too!

I kinda wish the only halls choice for first years to be Lafrowda. Anyone who doesn't go there doesn't know how much they're missing out.

Reply 48

That's stupid - Lafrowda isn't the be all end all.

exactly

It may not be the "be all and end all" but it is highly underestimated by certain people, especially those that have never lived there or only listen to the one in 50 people they know who've lived there and disliked it. Pretty much everyone who has lived in Laffy loves it :yep:

i admit i only know 3 people who lived there

but 2/3 hated it and were glad to leave

it all depends on the person i guess as the other person really liked it

Reply 52

I don't know any one who hated it. I lived there happily and miss aspects of it now!

Reply 53

i regret not choosing lafrowda, it has by far the best atmosphere of all the halls i visited last year, mates that live there pretty much all say that you get over its skankiness really quickly

Reply 54

It also massively depends on the people you get. People put with people who get on with each other will give the impression of a better atmosphere than people put with people who don't get on - whatever halls they are in. Its the same in any halls so i wouldn't worry about atmosphere just yet as that comes when you make friends... regardless of whether or not they're in your halls.

Choose a hall depending on your own personal standards, wants and 'needs'. If you think you want an ensuite then by all means apply for one, don't let what anyone else says here sway it. I wanted an ensuite and i applied for one, got one and was really glad i did. That said, there was no way i needed it and could have coped quite happily without it! If you want to go self catered - go self catered! I'd advise going down to look round all the halls if you can tbh (though im sure there are hundreds of photos floating around here showing the real halls, not just the ones staged for photos!) personally, if i'd have showed up to lafrowda on my first day, i wouldn't have moved in...!

Basically, everyone on here has their own set views of what makes the exeter experience amazing. Go with your instincts and then everything else will fall into place x

How does the postal system work in Lafrowda? Is it fairly easy to have parcels etc delivered to you?

Reply 56

No one knows this year. Welcome to UPP land.

How many flats are in a lafrowda block?

First floor, second floor and third floor are one flat each; ground floor is sometimes more-than-one (smaller ones), or partly taken up by a staff flat, or whatever. Reckon on forty-something students living in each block.

Lafrowda sounds awesome; just got to ask...can I keep pets there? I want another mouse. I miss my old buddy, Mohawk, and I need something little and furry to love. Are we allowed, or, if not - can I get away with it?

Reply 59

we had a mouse in penny c in first year... no one ever found out and the cleaner came in once a week!
