I dont know what i want to do when i leave school.

Hi guys, I'm starting to get really stressed as i don't know what to do when I leave school, I have an interest in finance and surveying but I don't know what type of finance I would like to do or if I'm capable of it, I keep trying to get work experience but most companies say they are unable to.
can someone please give me advice on what to do and what types of jobs and apprenticeship there are in finance.
much appreciated.

Hi Lewis,

I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling stressed but it’s great you’re looking for advice and I can certainly try to offer more information to help you get a starting point for your research!

You’ve already identified that finance related roles might be something you are interesting in researching so we can start there!

I’ve included a couple of websites which I would recommend as they can provide further details about different financial roles. They can also offer information about the day to day tasks, the qualifications you need and what future progression might be possible with experience.

You can also find out a little bit about whether an apprenticeship would be suitable to get you into the various different roles.

https://www.prospects.ac.uk/careers-advice/what-can-i-do-with-my-degree/accountancy-and-finance

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/legal-finance-and-accounting-apprenticeships

It can be difficult to say that one particular role will suit you better than any other, simply because I’m not sure what you would consider your strengths to be and what it is about finance which you enjoy, but I would strongly recommend having a chat with one of our advisers as they can go over the various options in more detail with you and hopefully allow you to feel more confident about your next steps!

Our advisers are available from 8am to 10pm everyday and you can see the different contact methods on the following page:

I hope this will be useful for you as a starting point, Lewis but feel free to get back in touch if there is anything else we can help with.

Good luck!

Tom.

thanks alot this will really help and I'm sure I will be in contact with your advisors often, I think the main issue is that most of my family work within trades so I never knew much about other jobs. I was always so focused on uni until recently as I realised I can't afford all the student debt etc. I think my main problem also is that when looking at job roles online it's hard to get it a feel for it, that's why I would like to observe people working in areas I'm interested I'm, also with apprenticeship I don't have much knowledge of them- I don't know if the qualifications they offer are good for certain roles and if there is good chances of development into a job I would enjoy however also pays well.

Again thank you

Thanks for your reply.

I understand your concerns around uni and the fees that are now in place however there are financial support options in place and you now do not need to repay any of your loan until you are earning a minimum of £25,000 a year.

Apprenticeships are a form of work based training where you spend the majority of your time with an employer and then one or two days a week at a local college or training provider working towards a relevant and accredited qualification. You are payed a minimum of £3.70 an hour although a lot of employers do pay more and they are a minimum of 12 months in length. Around 75% of apprentices stay with the same employer on completion of the apprenticeship and for those who don't 92% find full time employment within 6 months. They are a great option for more hands on learners who prefer to be doing as well as learning. Apprenticeships are a great alternative to further and higher education and can give you the opportunity to work with some of the UK's biggest employers.

There really is no right or wrong when it comes to the option that you decide to take it is about what is right for you, your career goals and your learning style.

There are a range of apprenticeships available in the finance sector ranging from levels 2-7, and completing a degree through university is also an option for you. I understand that it can be a difficult decision to make and our advisers will guide you through this and you are more than welcome to chat with us on TSR.

Best of luck - Sophie.
