The characteristics are:

* Natural hair colour kept, natural make-up, a little eyeliner or
* natural make up with coloured eyeliner, normally in bright colours of green and blue.
* However long unkempt (often backcombed)with an extreme side parting hair is typical for both kinds - often with an oversized pin backed fringe or in a messy almost falling out pony tail or loose knot.
* Large belts are worn over almost everything for females.
* The wearing of pyjama bottoms at all times of the day for females and males
* Oversized jogger bottoms are also acceptable.
* Oversized jumpers (School jerseys, or 'spat-macs' from the rowing schools; never university clothing), cardigans and gilet jackets
* Sandals and shorts in all weather conditions by males
* Thick, brightly-coloured scarves or pashminas for girls (usually pale pink)
* Upturned collars on shirts (stereotypically pink), rugby shirts and polo shirts[6]
* Sleeveless jackets or body warmers
* Displays of luxury items and expensive brands, particularly with clothing and clothing accessories
* Engagement in social activities associated with the British aristocracy and upper-middle class or "social circuit", such as high tea, lacrosse, croquet,Cricket, Pimm's, Cowes Week, Henley, Ascot, Wimbledon, polo, sailing, shooting, hunting, luxury holidays and lawn bowling
* Engagement in 'Tennis Week' at Hunstanton in the summer.
* The use of the received pronunciation accent
* Loud, rapid speech
* The use of "yah" as an informal "yes", instead of the more common "yeah"
* A wealthy background and, contingently, a private education. Schools associated with the rah stereotype are Eton, Harrow, Milton Abbey, St. Edward's, Oundle School, Radley, Shrewsbury, Stowe, Rugby school, Clifton, Winchester College, Canford, Marlborough College and Pocklington among many more public (well known private) schools.
* Conservative political views, in particular opposition to left-wing class warfare, perceived or otherwise; (for example, efforts to ban fox-hunting or to reform the House of Lords)
* The choice of Oxford or Cambridge for university-level education, or other universities such as Durham, Edinburgh, St. Andrews,Exeter, Bristol, or The Royal Agricultural College as a second choice. Choosing older, more traditional colleges within collegiate universities.

Usually study agriculture, geography or history of art.

* High spending on everyday items, e.g. food shopping at Waitrose and eating at expensive restaurants
* Always wearing at least one form of designer clothing, stereotypically Jack Wills and Ugg boots
* Generally drive large 4x4 vehicles; despite many rahs living in the countryside, the ownership of such vehicles does not necessarily mean they are used offroad. Students frequently will be seen driving Mini Coopers, the "Rah Car" of choice for the younger Rah.
* School holidays are frequently spent in British coastal locations, such as Salcombe, Abersoch or Polzeath

Skiing at least once a year.

* Females often wear horse riding style boots.
