If you look at statistics Girls seem to beat Boys academically up until A-levels, then they start to catch up then from university on wards men are beating women (not literally). Notice how I used boy and girl then men and women, girls often mature very quickly whereas boys need to take longer, which perhaps is the reason Girls beat them up until they start to mature, which leaves another question; why do girls mature quicker than boys?

u asked a question and answered it yourself

Girls mature faster, so they tend to do better.

Then when both are equal in terms of maturity the rest is played by their personal needs academically.

Generally speaking boys are immature and more likely to misbehave which impacts on your grades. When people get to college and then uni boys have matured and are less likely to misbehave.

Maybe when a guy starts to have an objective/career in mind they focus everything to get it whereas maybe a female always stays at a fucused level but not as much

During puberty the brain also developes and changes this happens earlier for girls and is completed earlier for girls. The last part of the brain to be effected by synaptic pruning and another process i forgot the name of, it when fat isn’t deposited around neurones to act as insulation, is the prefrontal cortex which is the part of the brain associated with inhibiting responses like stopping you from grabbing someone else’s food because your hungry. Maybe that’s why?

As a boy who has won the academic excellence award twice(highest grades in the year, I'm about to go into Year 11 by the way, if you want my age), I am a bit of an outlier, as are quite a few others on TSR who I have met, but I do agree with you that teenage girls are a lot smarter and more mature than teenage boys on average. I'm autistic and not a very social person, so I don't hang around with that many people, but the people who I do hang around with are mostly(but not entirely) girls, because teenage girls are just so much smarter and more intelligible and understandable than boys are....

I think it's just because teenage boys are on average just very immature and not particularly intelligent academically. And I don't think boys have only just started failing, I think boys have always been the lesser of the 2 academically and in terms of maturity, but for most of human history, we have been a patriarchal society(we still are), who have limited opportunities and ignored the achievements of women and girls, until now, when we are starting to recognize this more.

People always say that boys must be smarter because there have been more male geniuses.... Wrong. There have probably been more female geniuses than male geniuses throughout history, but these women have just been ignored by society. I don't think boys are failing or changing in any way, I just think that our society is finally starting to provide more equal opportunities for women and girls, and now finally we are recognizing that women are, intellectually, on average the more intellectual gender in childhood... We are still not completely there yet....

You talk about men outperforming women beyond A-levels, but I think that is probably because most women start having children or being pressured to have children around their early 20's and beyond, therefore decreasing their opportunities academically.

As for your second question, I don't know why girls mature faster than boys. Maybe their brains work differently? Maybe it's due to the different hormone combinations? Maybe it's just because boys mature super slow.... I don't know. Interesting questions though. Glad some people are bringing this up more, as in order for boys to improve, this needs to be brought up, as well as to acknowledge how well girls are performing.

If you want some sort of biological explaination to suggest why females might reach maturity earlier and thus perform better...

During development, stimulation of certain (GnRH) neurones by Kisspeptin (neurotransmitter) releasing neurones is thought to trigger both sexual and mental maturation. This occurs in female brains earlier than in males.

Unfortunately we don't know exactly why Kisspeptin releasing neurnes are activated earlier in females than males, but one theory suggests it is to do with reaching a particular body fat %.
^This may support the pattern of rising obesity levels being linked to girls reaching puberty earlier and earlier.

If I remember correctly there was a study demonstrating that girls have more neurones in the area that recalls experiences and feelings than boys at a given age, suggesting that perhaps girls' brains learn from experiences better than boys and this may add to why females are mentally more mature.

Of course there will be a massive variability in not only person-person performance, but environmental factors like social pressures, school etc.

It might have some connection with why you find 10 year olds with GCSEs and A Levels in mathematics but it's rare to find 10 year olds with GCSEs and A Levels in English and history. Humanities subjects and English literature require a certain degree of mental maturity that STEM subjects don't.

I have often wondered why I excelled in STEM subjects but was not as good at essay type subjects and bad at English literature. Was it something to do with parts of my brain being slower to develop than average? Are boys overall better at STEM subjects and girls overall better at humanities subjects and English literature at secondary school age because girls mature quicker than boys?

There could be cultural factors at play as well as biological factors.
