What's hard about quitting smoking?

This question is up for debate. I've put it in the H&R forum, but if a mod thinks it would be suited better somewhere else, then feel free to move it.

I used to smoke for approximately a year. I started smoking because i was offered it, it was lit so i took it - this was around... end of year 9? (awful, i know). Then at the end of year 10 i was asked why i kept smoking by a friend. We discussed it for around 2 minutes, and all she did was keep asking why. Eventually i said i don't know.

From here, i went cold turkey. No-one has forced me to quit or helped me along the way. I've never bought or tried a nicotine patch. I just literally went cold turkey and i've not had cravings for around a year. It's like cutting off that extension of your arm. :p: It never comes back. What's even more weird, i still hang around with people who smoke and it has still never bothered me.

What is so hard?

Why do you smoke?

Its so easy to quit if you've only really smoked for a year man, I think I did it by accident once because I hadn't smoked for two weeks.

I smoke cause I just uh, enjoy it. It's like drinking water when I'm thirsty or eating when I'm hungry, like a third sense or something.

Same here! Although i quit because i couldn't afford it, and i didn't see the point anymore.

I never knew why i smoked, it just sort of relieved me and gave me something to do. But i don't like being around other smokers now, it really irritates me haha, weird.

I quit without any help too, but i did start eatin a lot of more, thankfully i didnt put weight on but sheesh. I eat for three now!

I've had the same experience. I was smoking for about six years and then just stopped cold turkey. Then after about three days I never had a craving again, I didn't even care for ciggarettes. Nowadays it's like I never smoked at all, and I used to be a heavy smoker.

When it comes down to it, I think people are more scared by the prospect of quitting smoking rather than giving up itself and as soon as they've said they're giving up, they crawl back to the cigs because they feel they can't live enjoyably without them.

I went cold turkey for two months, and am really angry with myself for caving in!
For that period i felt lighter, healthier and my skin cleared, but the moment i have a drink or a shi*ty day, they're like my best friends in a packet.
The urge only grips hold of me usually in social/drinking situations, but im sure id be capable of quitting again.
Once my body tells me it's time to be smart about my overall health, i'll give it a more credible go..

I don't quite understand this myself, but I liken it to TSR.

i know its cannabis but...(teacher was shocked at this graph that i had to use at a recent english speaking test debate thing about whether cannabis should be legalized.. he was strongly apposed but had been a smoker)

I started smoking for the same reason as you OP, just for the sake of it really. I only smoke a few every week while at parties and while drinking now, I hated having smokers breath too

My bank balance is much healthier now I havent smoked in months and I haven't had any cravings really, which I put down to having only smoking for about half a year. I think once it becomes a long-term thing it becomes much harder.

I also think some people become addicted to smoking much quicker than others. I have friends who have only smoked for a few months and they don't have the willpower to stop, but others just seem to stop smoking with no side-effects whatsoever.

Pft. I call it no will power.

A year is a pretty long time mate.

Same here - it was like an extension of my arm. Why not just quit. You know. Quit. Save those hundreds of bucks you waste. Keep a decade or two of your life.

But that could be ages away! In which time the effects of smoking could already take place, not to mention the people you're hurting around you.

This is not, however, sufficient reason to quit - i know. :p:

Think it would be good to make a smoking buddy system on TSR?

because:
-i enjoy the act of smoking
-it gives me a buzz/lift
-it's something to do to break up my night when i go out drinking

i dont smoke so much anyway. just whenever i go out i REALLY want to smoke

i enjoy it. it something to look forward to.

It all boils down to whether you really want to quite or not; even the smallest desire will ruin your efforts.
You have to get to a state where you don't stop yourself from smoking, but rather do not actually have the urge to smoke.

You mean like stabbing a needle full of heroin into your eyeball when the first, tentative withdrawal symptoms of your morbid physiological addiction eventually start to manifest?

Yeah, that's really funny.

Simply because I don't want to or have to. I was fully aware of the health risks before I started smoking and I'll continue to do so in spite of the health risks because for whatever reason I enjoy it.
