I've taken up running and when I woke up after abrun yesterday, the bottom of my legs hurts at the back. It's a sharp pain when I stand or walk, what is it and what should I do.

Since you've just started there are small tears in your muscle. After you've built up your muscles they'll be much stronger and you wont be in pain after running anymore. Just rest up for 2-3 days and then try again. If you don't want to get out of routine I suggest doing arm or core workouts instead while your legs are healing. They might still not feel 100% after 2 days but if the pain isn't so overwhelming you physically can't run then just push through it.

Try stretching after you run. As a minimum, you should be stretching your quadriceps, hamstrings and calf muscle for 10 to 15 seconds, to allow the muscle to ease back to its normal length. You can find how to do these via Google or YouTube.

Warm baths with Epsom salts can also be a lifesaver after a run.
