hi, for those who are doing grade 8 now and are using the new syllabus what pieces have you chosen? im not really sure which one to choose.

I think there'll be another new syllabus by the time I do grade 8! I'm choosing my pieces for grade 6 at the moment. Hope you can make a good choice for you

Ooo I have painful memories of Violin. I did it for three months in year 8, god I hated it. I learnt quite quickly and was fairly comfortable with grade 1 exam music after a month and a bit, but I just didn't enjoy violin. I need to think about going for grade 6 piano sometime soon though. Might go and get the grade 6 exam pieces soon  (I've been thinking about doing this for aaaages, I got the 2001/02 pieces, then the 2003/04 pieces....I've made a bit of progress with the 03/04s, but not enough to be ready for the exam by christmas or march and get the Merit or Distinction that I want, not had that since grade 2 lol :frown: - ah well, all good fun....

When I choose exam pieces, I normally ask my piano teacher to play them through to me so I can get a feeling of what they'll sound like when they've been learnt, so I know that I'm working towards performing a piece that I'm going to enjoy performing. If you enjoy a piece, you'll play it better, so you'll get a better mark in the exam. If your teacher doesn't do that, then try and got recordings of some of the pieces in the book, I think the Associated Board produce recordings of their Violin exam pieces, so if you're doing their exams, try and get hold of one of their CDs.
Are any of Bach's Double Violin Concertos in there? Those ones are beautiful

Nach the Bach Doubles r much lower than Grade 8 ... well maybe not the last movement but the first to are 5 or 6 :frown: But they are gorgeous. I didn't see a lot of point in choosing music now bcoz i won;t b ready to take the exam in November and the syllabus changes in January - i.e. before the next set of exams. Plus i just started playing the viola and i'm a bit of a natural and John is determined to make me take Grade 8 viola instead of violin  tis all good fun tho!!

My brother is at music school in Manchester and he's playing something by Wieniawski which sounds pretty amazing. I'm not sure if he does grades as such, but it's probably at least grade 8.

Not sure of the name.

If ure brother's playing Wieniawski, he must be way above grade 8, coz his concertos are impossible

Yeah they're not easy by the look/sound of things. I think he is way above grade 8 the little git. *jealous* He's at Chethams School of Music so he should be good.

I believe Wieniawski's Dudziarz is one of the pieces on the latest grade eight syllabus. Were I doing grade eight I'd be inclined to choose the Hindemith from list C, probably the Tartini or Bach from A, and perhaps the Willem ten Have from B; although, having said that, I'd probably do what I normally do, namely go for the most annoying and ridiculously convoluted pieces on offer. (I assume, of course, that you are talking about the ABRSM syllabus, and not TCL).
I have to do my Grade 5 at Easter or face having to choose new pieces except I'm no where near ready and its helps greatly by the fact I have had quite a few different teachers over the last 3 years  ...all with different methods of teaching thanks to my stupid deputy head who keeps employing different people and shortening the length on lessons - I'm now down to having 30mins every 2 weeks!

Also, as it is my final year, I am facing the prospect of actually having to find a new teacher at the end of it to carry me on to university...I wonder how many teachers will be willing to accept a university music student who is apparently grade 5 but who has yet managed the feat of playing notes in first position correctly on the first attempt. (this is no joke...I'm hopeless!)

Gosh it's a small world. I know her. She used to teach me flute at RSAMD in Glasgow.

Violin music wise, it's not particularly advanced but when played well, I think the theme from Schindler's List is absolutely gorgeous.
