Breaking down large hydrocarbons into smaller ones. Eg c5h12 can break down to c3h8.

There is less demand for the longer chain hydrocarbons found in crude oil, so cracking is used to create smaller alkanes and alkenes. It uses very high temperatures and may require a catalyst.

An example of cracking would be:
C8H18 -> C5H12 + C3H6
(Octane -> pentane + propene)
But there are many possible combinations for what can be produced
