Funding for top up from FdA to BA - where the BA starts on year 2 of 3

Hi,

Quick qu for a friend (resident in England, studying in England)...

...Studying a foundation degree, level 5 outcome. 2yrs, full time - max available student finance is in place (fee & maint loans).

Wanting to top up this foundation degree to a full bachelors when it’s finished BUT is very unlikely to gain entry onto the 3rd/final/level 6 year of the bachelors straight away, because it’s a very niche course in a minor subject. There are no courses that are similar enough for L6 entry to be assumed. Done a very detailed UCAS search and there’s basically no courses that would permit L6 entry in this case.

They would however be very highly likely to enter at the 2nd/level 5 year of the bachelors.

Would funding (both fee AND maintenance loans) be able to be paid for the full duration of these 2 years top-up, even though they’ll effectively be studying at HE level 5 twice? Again, it would be full time study.

I know how the gift year and resits etc work, but not sure where it sits when attempting to top-up to bachelors in the way described above. - I guess a lot of students gain entry straight onto L6 one way or another, without having to regress back through L5.

Prior to this foundation degree, they had no prior HE study.

Edit: for clarity, it would be a total of 4yrs funding required. One at L4, two at L5, one at L6.

Thank you!!
