Criminology Society Official Thread!!!

Dunno if this is in the right place but....

Is anyone on here starting a Criminology course this september?! Or anybody already studying it?!

What uni will you be going to?! Any adivice about the course itself?!

I'm trying to find out more about it, but info seems hard to find, i'm guessing because it's a pretty new course...?!

Edit: Ok, so this has been the Criminology Society for a while now. Welcome to all that have joined! If you'd like to join, go to the list of societies and we're on the 3rd page about halfway down and then 'DancinBallerina' will approve!

I am in my final year (last few weeks :frown: ) of my Criminology degree. Anything you want to know, fire away!

I'm guessing you enjoyed it then?! hehe

Just would like to know what to expect really...the course content is not exactly in depth! I just know roughly what i'll be doing! I know all uni's are different though...

Also, anything you'd reccomend reading? I wanna try reading something before I start!

I have really enjoyed my degree. The criminology side will probably be mostly theory but the criminal justice aspect is always changing, esp with studying prisons and policing.

There isn't much reading really that you could do. A general criminology text if you want to find out more, just go to somewhere like Waterstones and have a browse. You could always e-mail the uni and ask for a reading list and pick out some texts. If you want any specific help then drop me a PM.

You have picked a good subject, very up-to-date and always in the news! I know its a long way off, but any idea what you will want to do after you finish the course?

Sounds good! Glad I decided to go for criminology instead of psychology!

Thanks for the advice! It's useful, if I can think of anything more specific once i've calmed down (i'm quite hyper at the moment about FINALLY starting somthing i'm sure i'll enjoy!) then i'll PM you, so thanks

Not a CLUE what I would like to do after, i've never had any idea! Have you decided on what you want to do?

What are the jobs prospects after having a degree in criminology?
Reply 6
Job prospects are quite varied! There is the obvious route such as the police, probation service, youth offending teams, other work related to the criminal justice system. You can do the GDL/CPE conversion to law and pursue a career in law. There are also general graduate recruitment schemes, teaching, working for the civil service. Finally there is always further study.

Phew, that was some list :p:

WOAH! Tis quite a list!

I don't think I wanna go down the police route, but hey, I think i'll get a better idea of what I wanna do once I start the course...
Hey, im doing Criminology and Sociology and im just coming to the end of my first year.

Have to say I have enjoyed it so far, although sometimes I've found it abit overwhelming with the work load, but overall its an interesting course to take.

Good choice, OP

Any questions, feel free to ask

PS mind me asking which University are you plannin on going to?

Thanks for the help though guys!

I'm heading to LSBU, may I ask where you're studying?
^^Im @ University of Gloucestershire. Complete spur of the moment thing, was due to go to Birmingham to do Social Work, but at the last minute changed my mind about the course and University. Its the right decision I have made..........

Glad it worked out for you!
Originally I wanted to do psychology, but decided to do criminology instead, i'll find out if i've made the right choice when I start!

Hows the Uni of Gloucestershire?
^^Ye i was going to do Criminology and Psychology but then I changed to Criminology and Sociology instead.

Gloucestershire is good, the campus where I am is very quiet in comparison to the Sports and Business campuses. Have enjoyed my time overall here so far.

I'm feeling a bit of love for Criminology going on here
I'm doing a law degree but can take criminology modules as optional ones. I took criminolgy modules this year (2nd) but decided to drop them early'ish for complicated reasons none of which related to my enjoyment of them.

I will be taking all criminology modules available to me in my final year and the tasters I had in my 2nd year proved quite stimulating.

I will be going to Durham to read criminology this October. You want more information? I bought a criminolgy textbook by Tim Newburn on Amazon to have an insight to what it will be like and enjoyed what I read. It's a big book though. It might be worth asking teachers of criminology at universities which textbooks are on their reading lists or for recommended reading. I did this with Leeds and LSE.

Criminology itself is an interdisciplinary course and has a large scope for research if that is your thing.

Yes, I 2nd that opinion in regards to the Tim Newburn book.

I have the book and I have to say its a very good book in comparison to books I have borrowed from the library at Uni. Its also very up to date (2007) and easy to understand. Cost me £30 from Waterstones however, its worth it - after all you'll be using it for the entire 3yrs of your degree!!
