Accommodation application rejected?

I live in London, albeit right on the outskirts, so commuting is not really an option. I'm pretty disappointed to not be able to stay in the halls. I'd really been looking forward to that aspect!

Does anyone know if there are any other cheap accommodation options nearby? I'd rather stay with someone, and preferably more than 1 person.

Or might there be a chance that a spot will open up??

London universities do not have enough accommodation for their first years, unlike other unis. Quite a few end up missing out.

You would need to ask accommodation about a waiting list, but you also get people who change their mind and are desperate to get out of contracts. You might look out for one of those.

If there is no uni accommodation then you are looking at private student halls or houseshares.

One idea is you can try and advertise and put together a student houseshare yourself with other students who have missed out but want to share with other students and preferably freshers from QM. You can then hunt for a place together and you all start off as equals. Ask QM if they put on any student get togethers so you can meet potential housemates or people in your situation.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear your accommodation application was rejected. Unfortunately, we do not have enough spaces for all of our students to live in halls and therefore priority is given to new students who are unable to commute to the university.

Your application would have been placed on a waiting list until any vacancies occur.

I myself was a student who lived in Greater London and my application was rejected too and placed on the waiting list, however I was offered a room by early-November.

You can also contact the QM Residential Services department and they will be happy to help you in finding alternative accommodation. Please take a look at their website here: http://www.residences.qmul.ac.uk/alternative/

QM Residential Services are also running a 'Find a flatmate' event on Tuesday 4 September, 10am - 5pm - you are more than welcome to attend, but please register beforehand here: https://qmul.hobsonsradius.com/ssc/eform/KEC75pC6868Ex6700kzxK.ssc

The aim of this event is to meet other students in a similar position and find a suitable rental property. Our team of housing advisors will also be on hand to help during the day.

Best,
Ryan

Thanks for the info! Would you say that there was much chance of a spot in the halls opening up for me before September....? I wouldn't mind moving in later if I was lucky enough, but I worry that I'd have a bit of a hard time getting along with housemates considering I'd be entering later.

Will check out the link:smile:

Hi,

You are welcome!

I think it would be unlikely a space would open up before September unfortunately. The earliest you would probably receive an offer would be in in October.

Hi again, just wondering if you reckon there's ANY accommodation near the Uni that doesn't exceed about £150 per week? I've searched pretty extensively and par one or two (which have extremely long waiting lists), they're all really expensive.

I really want to go to QMUL,but I genuinely can't if I can't even afford housing.

In this case, I would recommend to get in touch with our Housing Services department who will be able to help you with this and offer specialist advice.

You can contact them here: +44 (0)20 7882 6473 or meet face-to-face with an adviser on our 'Find a flatmate' event as mentioned previously.

The private halls do tend to be more expensive than the university halls, however if you are on the waiting list for QM halls you might be able to transfer to the university accommodation after a few weeks. But do make sure check the tenancy length of private halls before signing so you are not in a year long contact.

There are a number of private house and flat shares available, please take a read of the Private Accommodation Guide. You can also search for them on our dedicated Student Pad website which is linked from the below page.

Please see here for more information: http://www.residences.qmul.ac.uk/alternative/privaterenting/

The University of London, which Queen Mary is a member of, also has its own halls of residence. You are also welcome to apply for waiting list for these. Please take a look at the following link: http://www.residences.qmul.ac.uk/alternative/intercollegiatehalls/

Hi!
Are you going to start your first year?
I've got a place at QMUL through adjustment but as i live in London, I won't get a place in halls so I was hoping to get together a fun and sociable group of first years to find accomodation together. If you are interested please respond to this or PM me because I really need to find private accomodation too but i don't want to miss out on the social aspect so I would like to be with first years mostly

Hiya! Unfortunately, I just got accommodation :frown: I say unfortunately because I won't be with other first years, but I was getting super worried that accommodation would "run out" lol so I booked myself in with some second and third years - not ideal, but hey....

Sadly I've suddenly been getting messages from other first year students about looking for housing together literally right after I secured my place

I hope you find someone!

have you tried the QMUL student board? https://qmul.studentpad.co.uk/MessageBoard

I posted a thread there titled something along the lines of "1st year student looking for flatmates" so don't bother clicking on that anymore haha. I got most of my replies from that thread. I'd suggest posting something similar, including your email/contact no etc and letting the people come to you :u:

I do have someone in my inbox who's message I've for some reason kept, but not sure if they'd want me posting their email/contacts online :s-smilie: I'll send them a message directing them to you and this thread!

Hiya,
yep I'm in the same situation and since I live in greater london it unlikely I'll get accommodation. Please feel free to PM me about this. Are you planning on trying to get onto the private accommodation that QMUL offers?

hiya, I'm starting at qmul this year for dentistry
i'm from greater london and i've applied for accommodation, just wondering when i can expect to hear back and also what's the latest point in the year at which qm would offer a 1st year accommodation? i also applied for single sex, not sure if that makes me less likely to get it...

Gah.... when y'all get into a flat.... invite me over :u: jk
