Now or Later? HSBC or Santander?

I made the possible mistake of applying for student finance super late and with the current debit card company I'm with right now. Those are the details I registered with them so my question is, can I apply for a student bank account at another bank to get the benefits right now or should I just wait and let everything be confirmed and then change my bank details? Luckily the deadline for the benefits (I haven't decided between HSBC and Santander) is later in the year so I've got some time to sort everything out but, I'd still like to sort it as soon as possible.

If you are thinking of updating your bank details, you can do this at any time via your online account. All we would advise is that if you have a payment due, you allow at least 4 working days for the details to be changed prior to the payment date, or we may not have them updated in time and they will go to your old bank account.
