Motorway query

Jus been on the motorway to the Manchester airport for the first time. Everything was going fine I was driving in left lane until the lane I was driving in suddenly ended and there were cones on the sides and there was that white chevron pattern on my left. I gave the right indicator didn't hit the cones and moved to my right. The fact that I went right till the end of the lane is scaring me.What was I supposed to do or more accurately what I did was right or not?
You need to look ahead and plan, motorway situations can change so fast. especially with lane closures.

thanks for ur reply I think I went on the slip road as I was trying to stay in extreme left
i dont know I'm jus so confused
basically what motorway offense lead u to penalty or fine?
