Ok, I expect this thread has been up 100 times before but I want to know again. Why are you applying to Oxford for Mathematics rather than Cambridge, or visa versa??

I was originally set on cambridge, but went with a friend to both ox and cam open days in july. The oxford one was loads of fun and i met some really nice potential applicants- many of whom were mathematicians and they were nice and normal and interesting and happened to have an interest in mathematics. Then we went on to the cambridge open day and met some nice people (mostly thinking of doing sps actually) but the people applying to do maths i found i just couldn't have a conversation with- they didn't seem interested in people and asked questions about computer programming and stuff in the mathsy sessions. Also none of them sat next to me so i was all alone because the friend i had gone with was looking at nat sci. Generally I think the people who apply to cambridge for maths are really hardcore geeks because obviously it's the best university for it in the country, whereas I felt I fitted in much better with the oxford ones. Also, the cambridge course is more applied and they like you to have physics a level (i haven't and am not as into mechanics as other aspects of mathematics) whereas the oxford one is purer so much more fun!!! Plus there's less pressure with the whole step thing- I'm taking it anyway but just for fun and if i do rubbish it doesn't matter as my offers won't be based on it! So are you applying this year? If so where? xxx

Apply to Oxford, it's the best !!!!

Come on, you don't want some crappy STEP offer anyway. Oxford is still a brilliant university, 2nd best for Maths, plus you'll love it there, people are cool in Oxford - Look at what that person said; Cambridge mathmos are more hardcore; but it depends what you want I guess.

I'm applying there for Physics.

That's alright for you to say, Miss amazing mathmo!

Naaah, really, jonee - Apply to either, but tbh, Katie is applying to Cambridge so that may sway it in Cam's favour.

I prefer Oxford as a city. A bit more nightlife than Cambridge so I hear. Too many trees in Cambridge.
I don't want to do STEP.
I didn't know the course was more applied at Cam. I prefer pure so Oxford gets my vote if it's a "purer" course.
Also there's somebody I know at Oxford doing maths. That's not THE reason but it's a bonus to have a freindly face there. Same college and everything.

Umm - no! Oxford is NOT 2nd best for Maths - it comes 9th in the Times subject league tables.

As long as it is a hard degree course I'll be happy.

Just wondering wot is the best thing about the oxford mathematics course?
I'm applying to keble at oxford- right near the maths department and the accommodation and food is supposed to be nice  I had such difficulty deciding though! The form has gone now so there's no turning back  xxx

here we have yet another person being sad and thinking that League Tables are the definitive guide to the best universities. According to The Times, Stanford is 2nd best university in the world (which I rejected in favour of Oxford) and LSE is a crap unversity on the world-wide scale as it comes out in a crap position (which is obviously not true).

So what unbiased statistical evidence can YOU provide to prove that Oxford is second best for Maths?

Oh - and provide a link please for The Times guide to best universities in the world. You can't? I know you can't because they don't have one!

If you don't wish to be denigrated for your posts then don't denigrate others

I'm disappointed in you shiny for being so sarcastic - and you a new mod too!

Not a good example of leadership, eh?
