University of Leeds or University of Surrey for Chemical Engineering?

Hi guys i have an offer from university of leeds but i don't know if it is worth transferring?( To second year) I need to get an insight and some opinions from anyone who studies there or knows anything about it

I would like to know how many people get a 2.1 or first on average at the uni?
Are the exams really difficult say even if a good amount of effort was put in revision?
Are the lectures good?
Do they provide good material and resources ?
and overall the experience from the course ?

PLZZZ people let me know. Will be very grateful!!!

Why do you want to transfer? For one, the exams will be a similar difficulty to Surrey. Also Leeds has end of year exams, is that the same as Surrey?

Have you visited Leeds?

How do you know the exams will be of similiar difficulty? And no Surrey has January and May exams

Leeds i haven't been to but I hear a lot of good reviews about it, surrey is good too but when I was applying for unis Leeds requirement was A*AA which was difficult for me so I got accepted into Surrey and though I should transfer after getting a 2.1

It's an accredited course and will be of a similar standard. The universities are comparable.

Aren't you enjoying the Surrey course? Why do you actually want to transfer to Leeds?

It's a Russel group university and ranks higher for chemical engineering.

I enjoy my course buts it's surrey itself, area isn't quite fun in contrast to Leeds. Not much to do and it's very pricey living in Surrey

Youre very close to London which has more than plenty to do?!
You'd think it's close but it's not, 1 hour and 15 minutes and that is costly aswell.

I mean everyone is entitled to their own opinion but it just hasn't satisfied me. Some I know love it. It only has one superstore Tesco which is a half an hour walk from campus and buses come every 20 minutes. Surrey is a very pricey area to live. At times I don't have enough budget so I have to consider Leeds more
I didn't even know Surrey did ChemE. I did know Leeds had it, with several options of specialisation (including I believe nuclear, which is pretty uncommon in undergrad), which might be telling...although I did know Surrey has some nuclear options in it's Physics programme.

However I'd probably be inclined to suggest Leeds, although this is pretty much just based on the fact I've heard more of it wrt Engineering, whereas Surrey I only occasionally hear about, at all...and get the impression it's sort of "fading" bit :x

Regardless, Leeds isn't a bad university by any metric, or for ChemE in particular, so if you're otherwise happy with the course and location, I see little reason to change now.

Yep that's fair comment - Surrey *is* expensive. And Guildford is not Leeds... however I do recommend you visit before finalising your transfer.

I'm university of Surrey now, but I'm looking to transfer to Leeds. So in this context would you say there is more of a reason to transfer to Leeds?

tbh I want to be somewhere where I'll have a higher chance of getting a 2.1 or 1st. From whichuni and uni stats it says surrey has 35% of student getting higher than a 2.1 or 1st which is quite worrying. But I'm not sure if that's accurate because surrey was criticised for giving away too many firsts

? Surrey has 45% getting a 1st, and 50% getting a 2:1

whichuni is showing data for the BEng not the MEng. Most people do MEng.
That was really confusing me, thank you so much it makes sence now , I thought it was for masters only but I remembered masters it isnt based on first or 2.1. That's insane though 2.1 or a 1st that's amazing. But a degree would be still more respected in Leeds than Surrey right ?

Nope. Your university doesn't much matter for engineering careers, but Surrey has excellent industry connections anyway. Are you doing the Year In Industry?

You need to average 60% to do the MEng programme so you'd expect most people to get at least a 2.1. It's only people who underperform in final year that will get a 2.2.
Also, MEng is still graded with 1st, 2.1 etc.

Although Leeds is 14% Firsts, 61% 2.1.

Damn that seems low. Unless they're more lenient about letting people do the MEng. Or maybe the course is structured differently and final year is notably harder than past years.
I plan on doing a placement year but apparently it's not easy and a lot of people don't get placement years but ofcourse I'm still going to do my best and apply everywhere. Any advice ?

For Leeds it uses 55 people and for surrey it uses 30 WOuld that still mean it's realiable ??

I'm sure masters is grades based on merit and distinction? And I thought 75 on 2.1 and above was high? So I'm asssuming it's usually higher

Also on uni stats it's used 30 people for surrey and in a course it's actually 90 here.

For leads it used 55 so i don't know if that affects anything

Postgraduate master's (MSc) are but the MEng is classed as an undergraduate degree.

Sample size could be a factor but I know at Surrey you need to average 60% (a 2.1) to do the MEng and the consensus is that 4th year is easier than 3rd year so 25% of people underperforming seems steep. That said, I don't know if you need 60% to be allowed on the MEng at Leeds. If they let anyone who passes (40%) on it then those stats are decent and not comparable to Surrey's
